SALARY:

Entry Level: $42,924 ($3,577 per month, $20.64 per hour) HE-02, BU:10

Full Performance: $44,352 ($3,696 per month, $21.32 per hour) HE-04, BU:10

At Hilo Medical Center, a nationally-recognized "Top Performing" hospital, the Operating Room Aide is a valuable member of our Surgery-Gen Major team. We are currently seeking an Operating Room Aide-Entry Level, Full Performance for our busy Surgery-General Major department. This position will be responsible to support the surgical team; transfers patients from the gurney onto the surgery table; receive and stock supplies; clean the suction, table and various mechanical equipment in the operating room and perform other related duties as assigned.

Hilo is located on the east side of the island of Hawaii, and has a quaint old-Hawaii, small town atmosphere. The hospital staff is community-oriented. It is home to the Hawaii Community College, University of Hawaii, several excellent schools and convenient shopping.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY LEVEL: Read, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively with others in English; listen to and follow oral and written instructions precisely; learn the names of surgical instruments; learn decontamination and sterilization procedures; learn the proper setup of instrument trays; get along well with others; and participate in the activities of the surgical team.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR FULL PERFORMANCE: In addition to the qualifications required at the entry level, one (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting which provided support to a surgery crew. Such experience must have provided knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; setting up instrument trays; applicable hospital/facility/program policies and procedures; and the ability to independently decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments and setup instrument trays; and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED:

1) Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent may be substituted for all of the work experience required.

2) At least one (1) year of work experience in a Central Supply Unit which included decontaminating and sterilizing surgical instruments; setting up instruments trays; and knowledge of aseptic technique may be substituted for all of the work experience required.

3) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field (e.g. biology, human anatomy, forensics, physics, etc.) may be substituted for up to six (6) months of work experience.

CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) is preferred. Please submit copy of certification with the application.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to learn quickly; be a "team player" and get along well with others; organizational skills; good memory; and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SHIFTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS, BASED ON HOSPITAL OPERATIONS (SERVICES ARE PROVIDED 24/7).

MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for physical examinations, except the cost for drug screening, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
