Optical Engineer
Location: Santa Clara, CA (Hybrid)
Job Term: Full Time
The Opportunity:
Picarro is seeking an Optical Engineer to participate and drive the development of the next generation of laser-based analytical instrumentation and system solutions for industrial metrology purpose. These novel and transformative instruments will be deployed in a variety of applications, from semiconductor manufacturing to industrial emissions monitoring to air quality. The Optical Engineer will work with the R&D team and Systems Engineering team to understand the optical systems requirements and will participate in the design, assembly, and performance testing of CRDS instrumentation and subsystems. Strong experimental and data analysis skills are required.
The position will offer many opportunities and continuous intellectual challenges as you participate in the demanding process of designing, implementing and testing high-performance instruments which make use of state-of-the-art components in novel ways and develop them from prototypes to manufacturable items.
Responsibilities:
- Hands on assembling and aligning optical train
- Designing and specifying optical components
- Creating specification documents and working with vendors to design for manufacturability and process
- Calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting prototype optical systems
- Integrating optical sub-systems onto Picarro analyzers and test their performance
- Implement optical alignment and metrology process or test/tooling fixtures to achieve targeted optical performance
- Developing, documenting, and detailing operational methods sheets and assembly procedures
- Hand off to manufacturing department and train production optical technicians
- Reporting and presenting results to guide design decisions
Requirements:
- Optical bench, subsystem, or system assembly experience and comfort with complex optomechanical alignment
- Experience with optical design in software such as Zemax
- In-depth understanding of optics theory
- Ability to measure, troubleshoot, test, process, and communicate data, plots, signals, and readings
- Proven ability to perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads and deadlines
- Degrees in optical engineering preferred
- Experience with spectroscopy, laser alignment, and opto-mechanics a plus
