Part-Time CDL Tutor

Hourly Rate: $15.00

The Part-Time CDL Tutor provides academic support and encouragement to SWFT students completing the Truck Driver Training Program. The CDL Tutor is under the supervision of and will report to the SWFT Director.

CDL Tutors will provide support to students who fail their first attempt at the Commercial Driver’s License exam, students with low-literacy skills, and non-native English-speaking students.

The CDL Tutor is a part-time, hourly, grant-funded appointment on a schedule established by the SWFT Director. Internal and external events may require an altered work schedule. The position involves access to confidential information and records. Minimal supervision is provided; the CDL Tutor must be able to work independently. Annual renewal of position is contingent on renewal of funding through the Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) of the Illinois Community College Board.

Essential Job Functions

  • Meet with participants to assess their learning style and provide academic and study skills assistance unique to the individual. Tutoring sessions will take place on campus and in-person. Follow-up may take place via online/virtual sessions (e.g., Teams, Zoom) or phone.
  • Conduct group tutoring, study skills sessions, and test prep sessions, as necessary.
  • Use resources provided by the Driving 160 Academy and inform students of other academic resources available at Parkland College, the Learning Commons, and encourage students to utilize them, as necessary.
  • Share effective methods of study tips.
  • Complete required paperwork (e.g., time sheets, tutoring session summary sheets, evaluations, end of year feedback forms) in a timely manner.
  • Read and respond punctually to correspondence (including email).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience in subject field.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable and proficient in use of computers and other technology.
  • Ability to communicate and work with diverse groups of people.
  • Professionalism in actions and appearance.
  • Ability to learn the Parkland information system and new computer programs as technology changes.
