Description
NYU is committed to providing a campus community that reflects and enacts the values of inclusion, diversity, belonging, and equity that inform academic excellence. NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course, “Business and the Environment.”
The course is expected for Fall 2023 (late August to early December). The class meeting pattern for this 4 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.
The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC as a learning tool (e.g., a guest speaker, an excursion) is an expectation for the course. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content, and rigorous student assessment is required. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share NYU Washington, DC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.
Course Description:
The course exposes the students to the many nuances that characterize the interaction between the business world, the environment, and environmental policy. Most business activity impacts directly or indirectly the environment, by consuming non-reproducible resources, polluting water, air, and grounds, and contributing to climate change. There is both a risk to the environment from business practices, and also risks to businesses from environmental problems, including rising temperatures and sea levels, invasive species, freshwater shortages, overexploitation and extinctions, and global pandemics. Because of externalities, the market system is bound to produce more pollution than efficiency. This is the normative rationale for environmental policies whose goal is to reduce pollution-producing business activities. While economic science often has stark recipes for optimal regulatory instruments, in practice environmental policy is the outcome of a complex political process that mediates the desires of the citizenry, expressed via voting and interest groups, and those of the businesses themselves, which are channeled via the lobbying process.
