Passenger and Tugboat Operator at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project
Job description
We are seeking safety focused and environmentally concerned Passenger & Tugboat Operators. Operating out of Diablo Lake’s boat landing, the Passenger & Tugboat Operator assists with vessel operations at the Skagit Hydroelectric project. Newhalem, Washington is located 116 miles northeast of Seattle, in a very remote, rural area nestled in the northern Cascade mountain range at one of Washington State’s most beautiful and scenic hydro generating facilities.
Vessel operations include transporting equipment and personnel to Ross Dam, coordinating summer tours, overseeing the coordination of vessel maintenance and implementing safety policies, planning, training. Debris removal is also an important responsibility ensuring safe lake operations for vessel crew and recreational use. The waterways on Diablo Lake are narrow in places and during wind and inclement weather, necessitate a skilled vessel operator to perform duties safely. Vessel types used in lake operations include: two 26’ tugboats, one 40’ tug boat, one 42’ tour boat, 5 fast crew boats, and many lengths of barges. This position reports to a Generation Supervisor.
- Work as a Passenger & Tugboat Operator for federally and State inspected passenger vessels assisting in the operations at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project and waterways;
- Work as part of the vessel crew to ensure safe and efficient vessel operations
- May assist with or coordinate vessel maintenance duties and/or direct the work of Maintenance Laborers serving as deckhands;
- Operates a variety of vessel types including tugboats used to push or tow freight barges and floating structures through narrow channels, often in challenging weather conditions;
- Performs routine boat maintenance and servicing duties;
- Maintains vessels and other equipment, including log floats, booms and lights;
- Ability to maintain safe vessel operations at all times;
- Ability to frequently lift objects weighing in excess of 55 pounds;
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather;
- Strong customer service skills working with internal customers, tourists, and other passengers;
- Ability to work as a team member in a diverse work force;
- Ability to prioritize work and/or revise work plans to meet project deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities;
- Collects and assists in the disposal of lake debris; and
- Prepare and maintain records, timesheets, reports and related paperwork.
Education/Experience:
Requires Master Passenger & Towing Vessels Coast Guard License.
Certification/License:
Coast Guard license as Master Passenger & Towing Vessels,- Current Washington State Drivers’ License or evidence of equivalent mobility
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge and ability to ensure safe passenger and freight operations including safety practices, navigation, maintenance, and related regulatory knowledge associated with licensing requirements.
