Summary: The Patient Observer is in a staff position within the Nursing Department. The patient observer provides constant observation for patients at risk of harming themselves or others if left unattended and/or for safety issues. This patient observation may be provided as a ratio between one-to-one and one-to-four patients. The observation may be required in the Emergency Department, the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, Intensive Care Unit or a Medical/ Surgical unit. The incumbent will effectively interact with the patient(s), their significant others and the Nursing Staff. The Patient Observer communicates the general condition of the patient, safety issues or concerns directly with the Nursing staff. The Patient Observer works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. S/he will report directly to the Director of the ED.

Qualifications: Certified Nurse Assistant (preferred). Successful completion of a Constant Observation Training Program and completes a written post-test., and safety skills check. CPI Certification required for all Patient Observers within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter. High School Diploma/GED. Must possess the following skills: reading and writing; integrity and flexibility; must be a reliable and competent person. Ability to understand and follow through on instructions. Ability to verbally communicate effectively. Must possess strong observation and communication skills
