FMG is a national litigation firm with thirty offices in sixteen states and we are currently seeking a Payroll and Benefits Manager for our Atlanta location. We are conveniently located in the Galleria, just steps from Truist Park. The Payroll and Benefits Manager is responsible for overseeing the processing of the firm’s payroll, time and attendance and benefits, while also ensuring the accurate calculations of wages, tax withholdings, and company deductions. This position ensures timely payroll payments and benefits elections for all employees. To succeed the candidate will need to be able to focus on optimizing department processes and building lasting relationships with others within the Firm. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, technically savvy, eager to improve processes, adaptable, and is highly organized. Job Responsibilities

  • Process payroll for owners, exempt, and non-exempt employees
  • Manage a team of two payroll and benefits team members which includes setting goals, managing tasks, performance evaluations, and training
  • Manage workflow to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely
  • Understand proper tax treatment and processing requirements for wages and employer paid benefits
  • Ensure compliance with all state payroll laws that the Firm operates including AZ, CA, GA, FL, IL, IN, OH, OK, KY, MA, TX, TN, PA, NJ, NV, and NY
  • Receive and document any necessary approvals prior to processing and non-standard payments
  • Process accurate and timely year-end reporting (W-2, W-2c, 1095-C etc.)
  • Process manual checks when needed
  • Monitor changes and remains current on legal, regulatory, or governmental requirements (e.g., wage and hour, garnishments, tax matters, 401(k) and other benefit deductions)
  • Ensure all new hires are successfully onboarded with the appropriate benefits elections
  • Ensure all terminated employees are successfully offboarded and provided the appropriate separation documentation required by law
  • Enter all employees into the various benefits systems utilizing EDI files and manual entry
  • Validate that all employees are provided with the appropriate COBRA documentation and other required notices
  • Oversee the preparation of required reports or payments to government agencies, insurance companies, or other organizations
  • Perform time and attendance system setup and time reporting; performing audits as needed
  • Perform the payroll processing activities for the payroll department, which includes work allocation, problem resolution and training
  • Maintain Firm 401(k) Plans to include contributions, distributions, Safe Harbor, and Profit-Sharing compliance
  • Oversee annual 401(k) compliance audits
  • Oversee compliance with benefits plans and ensure accurate plan enrollments
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience calculating and processing in-house payroll
  • Prior experience with payroll, benefits, time, and general ledger systems required
  • Must have multistate payroll experience
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable Federal and multistate payroll laws (FMLA, FLSA, e.g.) along with IRS regulations that impact payroll
  • Prior supervisor experience a plus
  • Knowledge of Ulti Pro (UKG) software a plus
  • Possess the ability to combine reports and utilize software to eliminate manual data entries
  • Basic knowledge of 401(k), Safe Harbor, and Profit-Sharing regulations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with attorneys, staff, and vendors in both written and verbal communication
  • Strong organization and time management skills, along with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Maintain a calm, courteous and professional demeanor, with a positive attitude
  • Ability to multi-task and handle stressful situations
  • Ability to pass a background and credit check

Education

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration (Preferred)

Physical Duties

The position is based in a comfortable, climate-controlled office setting with handicap access. The position requires prolonged sitting, standing and computer work. You may occasionally be required to lift up to 10-15 pounds. The ability to consistently hear, understand, listen, and speak to meet the needs and standards of the practice. In addition, the position requires:

  • Ability to use a computer for eight hours or more a day.
  • The position often requires dealing with moderate to high stress. The ability to cope with and manage stress is essential.
