Job description
JOB PURPOSE:
Reviews schedules, orders, and medical record documentation for coding purposes to identify missing
charge information. Has a thorough understanding of the coding process in order to make decisions,
respond, and forward information in an appropriate manner to leadership regarding medical record
documentation and charges.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluates medical record documentation to optimize reimbursement by ensuring that diagnostic,
procedural codes, and other documentation accurately reflect and support the visit.
2. Compiles paperwork, including medical records pulled from other EMRs for coding review and/or
communication via email or Right Fax.
3. Enter charges manually for Non-Piedmont facility charges.
4. Ensures demographic information and documentation are congruent with scheduled or performed
procedures.
5. Monitors/Audits schedules, orders, surgery logs, and reports to capture unbilled charges including
Non-Piedmont facility charges, and escalates as appropriate.
6. Audits manual charge entry.
7. Maintains established productivity and accuracy/quality standards.
8. Keeps track of their own continuing education credits to maintain professional credentials.
9. Completes other duties as assigned by Coding Supervisor.
- Basic knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques and surgical procedures;
- Basic knowledge of Standards of Ethical Coding.
- Skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Skills and ability to research and analyze medical record information, draw conclusions, and resolve
- Ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Skills and ability to maintain working relationships with physicians and other staff.
- Skills and ability to review the work of others and maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Applications including (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc).
