$7,720.24 - $8,115.84 - $8,532.08 - $8,968.90 - $9,427.66 - $9,910.88

The current vacancy exists in the Community Development Department. The Plan Check Engineer will be assigned to the Building and Life Safety division and reports to the Deputy Director. The Building and Life Safety Division is responsible for the enforcement of building codes, laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to building construction and remodeling within the City of Stockton.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.

Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system and are in a "for-cause" employment status represented by the Mid-Management/Supervisory Level Unit Employees bargaining unit.
Under general supervision, performs complex work involving the review, examination, and approval of building construction, improvement and repair plans and specifications for compliance with structural and nonstructural requirements, applicable codes and regulations; plans, directs and reviews the work of assigned plan checkers, performs related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a lead class, with incumbents performing plan checking on more complex projects, including major commercial and industrial developments, and directing work in assigned specialty areas. Assignments are varied and allow for the exercise of considerable judgment and independence in the performance of plan check engineering work. This class is distinguished from Supervising Plan Checker/Structural Engineer in that the latter has overall supervisory responsibility for the plan checking function.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in architecture, civil or structural engineering or a closely related field AND two (2) years of experience in architectural, civil or structural design or plans and specifications review.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California's driver's license
  • Must possess a valid California registration as a Civil or Structural Engineer or be licensed as a Professional Architect.
The Examination:

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include an evaluation of training and experience or oral examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
