The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for a Planner, Weld, Machine, Paint & Facilities in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time
Starting Salary Range: $76,700. - $92,800.

Position Summary:
Responsible for planning the work activities for internal crew resources for qualified weld and fabrication work, machine shop, paint shop, and facilities team in support of maintaining the company’s overall utility facilities and asset and system infrastructure. These facilities and assets are within Electric, Water and Chiller Generating Facilities, Electric and Water Transmission and Distribution Systems and as well as other general Facility Locations as well as located throughout the general BWL service territory. Planning activities include, but are not limited to, identification of costs, material, equipment, and resources needed for each task, duration of work tasks, preparation of system and asset clearance requests and work task coordination with internal resources, other internal stakeholders, contractors, vendors, governmental agencies, and customers.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs job site walk down and review.
  • Applies industry standards and techniques in building out work and project schedules and supporting budget requirements.
  • Build out various documents and reports which require an Intermediate level of knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams.
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features.
  • Ability to read and comprehend intermediate level sketches, prints, drawings and/or schematics.
  • Can provide planning and coordination back up support for 2 or more resource areas or craft groups and the assets and systems they support.
  • Operates independently in performing planning and scheduling functions.
  • Edits or marks up maintenance work specifications as needed.
  • Performs research and investigations regarding work efforts, asset maintenance and pertinent job sites.
  • Plans, organizes, monitors, and coordinates all maintenance work tasks for mid-size or medium complexity projects working up to high level complexity projects.
  • Must demonstrate intermediate to advance level of understanding in either electric power infrastructure projects within transmission or distribution design, water distribution systems, or water or Electric production facilities.
  • Ability to foster and develop collaborative partnerships across various stakeholder groups resulting in successful outcomes.
  • Decision Making & Analysis using applicable technologies i.e., MS Project, Excel, Access, SAP, etc.
  • Ability to create and reach successful submission for mid-level complexity clearances.
  • Performs tasks in accordance with BWL procedures and guidelines.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment.
  • Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Performs other duties as necessitated by job responsibilities, including on call / emergent work.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:
Required:

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related field; or Journey status with combination 5 + years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires a minimum three years of previous experience in planning, maintenance, or utilities.
  • Proven history of taking initiative.

Preferred:

  • Utility industry experience.
  • Project or construction management experience.
  • Background in qualified weld work or experience in tool and dye work.
  • Licensed in HVAC or previous experience.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to move about inside the office environment. Operates a computer and other office equipment for good portion of the day. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/ below the knee level or reach above head. Considerable walking on concrete, uneven terrain, and grating. Must climb stairs and work from ladders, platforms, and personal lifts to conduct inspections and make adjustments during emergencies. Good vision required to distinguish colors and numbers when reading gauges, charts, and recorders. Must respond to emergency conditions requiring ability to communicate via phone or radio. Must be able to work various shifts if required. Occasionally exposed to confined/enclosed spaces, dust, coal dust, and inclement weather.

Majority of work is in a temperature-controlled office environment. Must perform site visits to various job and work sites.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
