Job description

About us

Shechner Lab, University of Washington is a small business in Seattle, WA. We are innovative, engaging, collaborative and our goal is to discover fundamental principles of cell biology, and new therapeutic routes for a range human diseases. We aim to understand how RNA molecules drive subcellular compartmentalization, and how these architectural RNAs are dysregulated in human disease. We specialize in the development of innovative, cutting-edge Chemical Biology and Genomics methods, augmented by a broad toolbox of cell biological and biochemical approaches. We are a small, but tightly knit and nimble Academic Lab, and highly collaborative within the world-class research environment here at UW.

Our work environment includes:

  • Modern office setting
  • Growth opportunities
  • Work-from-home days
  • Casual work attire
  • International workforce
  • Relaxed atmosphere
  • Regular social events
  • On-the-job training
  • Flexible working hours
  • Safe work environment
  • Lively atmosphere

SheqLab (www.shechnerlab.org) has several exciting projects that are just taking off, and we need a motivated and enthusiastic post-baccalaureate scientist to join our team of innovative RNA nerds.

Part of your position will be overseeing core lab chores (maintaining reagent stocks, overseeing glassware cleaning, etc), but these should take no more than a few hours a week. The main focus of your work will be to contribute to—and eventually lead—your own primary research projects. Depending on the lab's need and your interests, these projects might explore how "microneighborhoods" in the nucleus control mammalian gene expression, how "membraneless organelles" like the nucleolus are assembled throughout the cell cycle, how these assembly processes are disrupted in cancer. Your work might also continue to develop novel genomics technologies. Ideally, we'd like to bring someone on for two years, if possible.

As a full member of the Shechner lab, you will experience first-hand what life is like doing cutting-edge molecular biology research. You will work closely with Professor Shechner to train in the advanced techniques that are standard in our group, and will learn the subtleties of experimental design, implementation, and data analysis. You will present at our weekly group meetings, participate in journal clubs, and will be an active member in scientific collaborations with other groups, building strong ties with the Seattle molecular biology community. And, you will be listed as an author on any manuscript to which you make a significant intellectual or technical contribution. This will provide vital training, and in an ideal environment, with which to launch an academic- or industry-centered research career.

Post-bacs should hold a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, or related disciplines; current UW Seniors are expected to complete their degree in one of these majors this year. Familiarity with the basic concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry are required. Applicants with at least a year of bench experience in a molecular biology lab will be highly favored.

Experience with coding and basic bioinformatic analyses (e.g. RNA-Seq or ChIP-Seq analysis) would be quite welcomed but are not required.

Applicants should provide a CV, outlining relevant research experience, skillset and coursework, as well as a brief cover letter descrivbin their interest in the group.
