The Division of Student Affairs at UVA is seeking applicants to fill a new role as Program Coordinator for the Hoos First: First-Generation and Limited-Income Initiatives Office. The Hoos First office aims to empower, support and advocate for first-generation and/or limited income (FGLI) students at UVA in an inclusive environment where their shared experiences are welcomed and affirmed. The program will serve as a gateway for the network of services and resources necessary to expand and strengthen access to academic support, financial aid, career opportunities, and social engagement for the university’s FGLI student community.

Reporting to the Director of Hoos First, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for addressing the diverse needs of first-generation and/or limited-income students by coordinating programs, initiatives, and resources strategically focused on supporting the academic, financial, personal, career, and social transition challenges for approximately 2,000 UVA undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. In collaboration with university stakeholders, the Program Coordinator will strive to expand access to academic support and financial resources, foster community engagement, sense of belonging, strengthen well-being, and develop relationships with existing campus programs focused on FGLI student success.

The Program Coordinator will assist the Director in executing a long-range vision for the Hoos First program by ensuring activities and initiatives are aligned with the university’s 2030 Strategic Plan. Consequently, the Program Coordinator shall serve as a champion for FGLI students and families as it relates to outreach and advocacy with a keen focus on creating an eco-system of wraparound services and resources that will enable individuals to thrive academically, socially, and professionally. Consistent with student self-governance, the Program Director will be strongly encouraged to partner with and support students in designing and implementing programs to support the Hoos First student community. Located in Charlottesville, VA, the position is primarily student-facing and requires in-person work on the grounds of the University of Virginia.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning and assessment of high impact programs and services
  • Maintain excellent relationships with key university stakeholders
  • Connect students facing heightened personal and academic challenges to appropriate campus resources
  • Assist with the development and execution of a FGLI peer mentoring program
  • Coordinate the implementation of personal and academic support programs for FGLI students
  • Promote program benefits and opportunities to potential students and stakeholders
  • Organize and implement co-curricular programming - financial seminars, professional and leadership development training, cultural enrichment, etc.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to the best practices of students affairs programming and supporting FGLI students
  • Work in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and chaperone day and overnight trips with program participants
  • Serve as a liaison to FGLI student organizations
  • Assist in the supervision of peer mentors and student office staff
  • Manage funding opportunities for qualified students
  • Serve on committees as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned .


Hoos First Program Coordinator candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or related field and two years of relevant experience, student/graduate student experience may be considered
  • Strong commitment to the division’s core values of academic rigor, honor, student self-governance, public service, diversity and multiculturalism, and health and wellness
  • Knowledge of or experience working with underserved groups such as first-generation, limited-income, transfer and/or non-traditional students from underrepresented communities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and fostering a sense of belonging
  • Experience in college student services and programming
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends to support programming initiatives
  • Demonstrated organization, interpersonal, customer service, and time management skills
  • Basic computer and social media literacy
  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • Possess a strong work ethic
  • Capacity to work independently or as part of a team.

A competitive applicant for the Hoos First Program Coordinator position will have many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:

  • Completed or in progress of a Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, counseling, or a related field
  • Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to the Hoos First student demographic
  • Prior experience working with or supporting the needs of first-generation and/or limited-income students
  • Awareness of the best practices and research related to the support and development of college students
  • Excellent operational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Strong knowledge of student affairs practices and programmatic areas
  • Prior experience with college community and stakeholder engagement
  • Proficient computer and social media literacy.

The salary range is $45,000-$55,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Hoos First Program Coordinator is a full-time, twelve-month University Professional Staff position with full benefits . Benefits package highlights include:
