Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The TEACCH Autism Program began in 1972 as a system of university-based regional centers to serve children, adolescents and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. As part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the program has an active clinical, teaching, and research program. TEACCH operates seven community regional clinics across the state. Each center offers a set of core services along with unique demonstration programs meeting the needs of individuals with ASD, their families, and professionals across the state of North Carolina. Also, part of TEACCH are the Carolina Living and Learning Center, a residential/vocational training facility for autistic adults as well as an Employment Services program providing Job Coaching and related services to adults on the spectrum.

TEACCH is part of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program and faculty are actively involved in student and professional training activities within the state, nation, and across the world. All TEACCH programs are coordinated through a central administration and research unit in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

TEACCH provides clinical services such as diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy, speech language therapy, and parent support groups. In addition, TEACCH conducts training nationally and internationally and provides consultation for teachers, residential care providers, and other professionals from a variety of disciplines. Research activities include clinical trials intervention and implementation studies.

This position is located in Carrboro, NC.

Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist individuals who have an autism spectrum diagnosis to meet employment needs. This position further involves coordination of responsibilities involving planning program services/activities, monitoring, evaluating, and modifying program activities; and developing resources.

As part of the TEACCH and Employment Services philosophy, all staff members including administrative staff members will work directly with adults with autism as part of their job. This position is not center based, and all services are provided in the community. We are required to travel great distances, sometimes at a moment’s notice. Individuals in this position are required to work alone in the community providing support to autistic adults.

In addition to working with autistic adults, we work closely with the other support systems of the individual. This includes but is not limited to, additional family members, employers, other provider agencies, medical staff, residential providers, and local mental health agencies and other providers of funding for the services provided by TEACCH Employment Services. As a result, members of the staff must display excellent communication skills to maintain positive relationships with the community at large.

This position provides employment supports for approximately 25 people on the autism spectrum, who are already in stable job placements, but who are spread out over a large geographical area. They set their own schedules to meet client needs, and interface with many different agencies and companies. They need to work quickly to solve problems with minimal supervision, as they work more independently than Entry Level HSPSTs, but still operate under direct supervision for more complicated issues. Their case load remains mostly stable with a few changes throughout the year.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work in person and perform the same job duties as the client. Demonstrating work skills is a part of this position.
