Prospectus Advisor

Hourly: $17.26

The scope and authority of the adviser role provides active mentoring to the students.

The Prospectus Advisor is a part-time, 19-hours or less per week position, on a schedule established by the Director of Student Life. The position requires the ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively verbally and in writing with constituent groups, including students, colleagues, and community members.

Essential Job Functions

  • The adviser for publication acts as the de facto “managing editor,” providing hands-on guidance to the student editors and reporters, including:
  • Developing job descriptions for all roles in partnership with the Prospectus Business Manager in Student Life.
  • Providing training/orientation for student reporters and editors, including coordinating with the faculty advisor for design to schedule guest speakers (see TRAINING below).
  • Collaborating with student editors on editing, providing feedback to reporters, determining story selection and placement.
  • Advising student reporters and editors on matters of media law, ethics, news gathering/reporting techniques, interviewing, writing, style, etc.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with the faculty advisor for design to assist students in producing a quality publication both in print and online.
  • Acting as liaison between newspaper staff and Student Services, Parkland administration, and faculty/staff who have questions or suggestions about the newspaper.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree with at least two (2) years of related work experience or combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to handle confidential materials judiciously, and in accordance with FERPA and other higher education laws.
  • Demonstrated excellence with Microsoft Office Suite applications and database management and the ability to learn Parkland information systems and new programs as technology changes.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to communicate accurately and effectively verbally and in writing with diverse constituent groups.
  • Excellent time management skills, as evidenced by the ability to handle multiple tasks, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
