Job Description:

  • Strategic Communications Specialist to support both internal communications and communications for other assigned program areas and initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and strengthen systems for communicating with employees
  • Draft and disseminate content for employee communications, presentations, web pages, social media, newsletters, educational materials, forms/applications, and related materials
  • Assist with developing, implementing, and maintaining schedules for reviewing and updating content
  • Lead efforts to ensure that directions, signage, and other communications at Department buildings are clear and accessible for employees and members of the public
  • Provide strategic communications guidance and technical assistance to Department Programs and initiatives
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate communications plans and campaigns and assist with paid and earned media activities for Department Programs and initiatives
  • Including editing, design, production, and dissemination of data reports, publications, presentations, and visualizations
  • Coordinate design and production of communications materials for assigned Program areas and initiatives, working with internal communications team members and external vendors as appropriate
  • Review and tailor messages and materials for intended audiences, including applying best practices related to health literacy, plain language, and readability
  • Ensure that messages and materials adhere to agency communications policies and standards for branding, graphics, style, Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS), and accessibility
  • Research and apply best practices from other local, regional, or national partners
  • Attend and provide communications support for meetings and events as assigned
  • Assist with crisis and emergency risk communication in the event of a public health emergency response
  • Complete related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Possession of strong attention to detail
  • A thorough knowledge of health communications, social marketing, health literacy, design, and public/media relations principles, practices, and techniques
  • The ability to evaluate the health beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions of specific audiences, including their needs for information about the department's programs and objectives
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of public health
  • Experience writing and developing communications materials, presentations, and written reports tailored to specific and non-technical audiences
  • A thorough knowledge of social media principles, practices, and techniques, and the ability to apply such knowledge to write effective social media content and assist with monitoring agency social media accounts
  • The ability to work independently to manage multiple projects and deadlines, with attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Initiative to launch, complete, and report out on long-term projects and to independently take projects from concept to completion
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, public groups, private and public agencies, and community partners and members from diverse backgrounds
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products and any related capacities and abilities

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a college of recognized standing, with a degree in English, communications, public relations, journalism, public health, or related field
  • Considerable employment in a responsible position in public health, journalism, media relations, communications/marketing, or a related field
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience

Other:

  • May occasionally include some non-standard work hours on evening or weekends.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $38.94 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
