BAYAC AmeriCorps collaborates with over 40 agencies in schools and community-based organizations to serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC Members commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) term of service in the Bay Area's most high-need communities, working to provide youth with opportunities for meaningful engagement, skill building, and emotional and social development. This is a paid work experience program for folks who are looking to advance their career working with youth and in the field of education.
In particular, we are looking to fill Health and Wellness Coordinator positions in organizations such as Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) - COSP Beacon Programs. The AmeriCorps members will be part of a team to help implementation of the Obesity Prevention initiative, funded by the City of San Pablo. This initiative seeks to address health concerns of childhood obesity in the community through increasing physical activity, increasing healthy eating and drinking, and enhancing each schools’ capability to be a healthy environment. As the Health and Wellness Coordinator, you will work at two school sites and work closely with the Beacon Directors, after school Coordinators and your AmeriCorps peers to create activities and health and wellness campaigns. Each school will have some elements that are specific to that school and some that will be similar across sites. The Corps members will participate in designing program activities and will take a lead in implementing program elements.
Position duties may include:
- Create program activities
- Support the development of school-wide health initiatives
- Coordinating others involved in programming
- Supervision and monitoring of youth in program
- Paperwork, documentation and data collection for evaluation
- Maintain communication between staff, school staff, teachers, and families.
- Attend any staff meetings
- Keep equipment and supplies in order
- Support students/youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life
- Promote a safe and positive learning environment
- Actively supervise and ensure student/youth safety at all times
- Model positive attitudes, behaviors, and language
- Communicate regularly with the site coordinator and regional supervisor
- Attend and participate in weekly training and cohort meetings
Some of the specific program elements may include:
- Organizing recess/lunchtime activities. The recess coach is a key figure on the playground that supports creating a fun, inclusive and safe recess for everyone. Set up Equipment and invite students to join in.
- Play kickball, soccer, and more.
- Facilitating and planning whole school game and/or field days. We may organize these in partnership with the other schools.
- Creating sports games and possibly competitive physical activities – lunchtime, after school, perhaps weekend
- Create Healthy Eating activities for the schools that have gardens
- With the Beacon Director and school leadership, implement school-wide physical activity and/or wellness campaigns or activities
- Support the development and implementation of Rethink Your Drink – or other water drinking efforts
- Help schools to take action on one Wellness Policy (e.g. no sugary snacks at school functions, or only water at faculty meetings, or eliminating “benching” at recess as discipline as it counters the importance of physical activity.)

Qualifications:
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States
- At least 17 years old
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and commit to a 6-month term of service
- Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
- Prefer to have 48 college credits completed
- Prefer bilingual in Spanish/English, not required
