Position Summary: To assist teachers, school leaders, and staff in serving refugee students through classroom activities, day-time tutoring, parent liaison support, and other activities so that refugee students may learn effectively in their new school environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma; Associate’s degree preferred
  • Bilingual in English and target language, preferred
  • Previous experience working in an educational setting

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

  • Participates in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.
  • Conducts learning exercises with small groups of refugee students.
  • Guides refugee students in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  • Alerts the teacher to the special needs of individual children.
  • Provides escort and assistance to children as necessary.
  • Listens to the students in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them
  • Helps maintain individual records for each child.
  • Provide one on one instructional support to a refugee student under the direction of the lead teacher.
  • Fosters good eating habits and table manners in children.
  • Assists with the supervision of children during regular play periods.
  • Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays.
  • Under the supervision of the teacher, works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Accompanies the student when trips to the office or school nurse are necessary.
  • Enforces school board policies and regulations.
  • Provides support instruction following the initial instruction by the lead teacher.
  • Works cooperatively with teachers, administrators, and consultants to ensure a smooth operation.
  • Supports teachers and school leaders in parent engagement with parents of refugee students.
  • Attend professional development as directed.
  • Attend work on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities provided.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others on a team.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Skills and Abilities Required: The following characteristics and physical skills are important for the successful performance of assigned duties.

  • Oral and literacy proficiency in English and target language
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and students.
  • Ability to operate various office computers, fax machines, and copiers.
  • Ability to be flexible and perform multiple tasks successfully.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This role does not directly supervise any individuals

Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from rare to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

  • Regular classroom environment, including being able to sit or stand for long periods of time without a break, etc.
  • Normal effort of occasional periods of moderate physical activity.
