A Brief Overview

Dr. William Hughes Peranteau is an attending surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic and Fetal Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and an assistant professor of surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

His areas of interest include fetal biology, fetal and neonatal surgery, and general pediatric surgery. A native of Gloucester City, New Jersey, just 10 miles east of CHOP’s Main campus, Dr. Peranteau earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton University, and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

“CHOP is unique in that it integrates cutting-edge basic science research with the largest fetal care center in the world, offering a multidisciplinary team of experts that have advanced the field and will continue to advance the field into the future,” he says. “I’m very lucky to have grown up in this area, and now, to be able to practice pediatric surgery at the best possible place and be involved in such an exciting research community here is awesome.”

Prior to joining the Center team in 2012, Dr. Peranteau completed his residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Mass., and a fellowship in pediatric general surgery at CHOP. He also served as a research fellow with CHOP’s Center for Fetal Research for four years, investigating the role of in utero bone marrow and stem cell transplantation for the management of congenital hematologic disorders such as sickle cell disease.

“This area of research is potentially readily translatable to clinical application,” Dr. Peranteau says. “The group of people not only within the Department of Pediatric General Surgery and the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT) but also the CHOP community as a whole, with experts in every field of pediatrics, make CHOP an unbelievable place to work and a place that’s ripe for advancing clinical medicine.”

Dr. Peranteau has published articles in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, Experimental Hematology and Blood. He is board certified in pediatric surgery and general surgery.

What you will do

• Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods
• Performs research procedures on experimental samples as agreed with PI
• Plans and develops specific research protocols and procedures
• Develops & troubleshooting new techniques and ideas
• Composes methods and sets-up protocols accurately under the direction of the program director or senior scientist, modifies methods and protocols when required
• Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes & reports the data
• Presents & discusses work at weekly lab meetings
• Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory
• Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks
• Maintains laboratory equipment, safety procedures and compliance records
• Researches journal, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information
• Prepares data for publication or presentation at national/international symposia
• May be called upon to present at national symposia
• Supervises junior members of laboratory

Education Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree Required
• Master's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

• At least one (1) year scientifically relevant experience Required
• At least four (4) years scientifically relevant experience Preferred

Skills and Abilities

• Proficient in various research and/or analytical techniques
