Job Title: Research Associate III

SUMMARY: (Basic purpose of the job)

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, performs highly specialized and technical research on heart metabolism. Performs various research relating to investigatory activities of the laboratory, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations, and conclusions. Assists in the grant writing, manuscript preparation and submission, management, and coordination of the laboratory. Develops own project(s), under the direction of the PI, to lead to independent funding.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Research and Projects

1. Animal experience required which includes handling mice.

2. Plans and conducts research experiments. Provides methodological direction for research experiments.

3. Performs biochemistry and molecular biology procedures, including cloning and sub-cloning, construction of adenoviral constructs for in vitro and in vivo as directed by PI,

4. Assists in performing animal surgeries, provides postoperative care and handles samples. Submits histology samples to the Histology lab and performs some histology analyses.
5. Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments.
6. Other tasks will include yeast two-hybrid screening and gene transfection in isolated cardiac myocytes.

7. Develops own research project(s) under the guidance of the PI and applies for grant funding.

Maintains and cares for research mouse colonies involved in cardiovascular projects

8. Breeds, genotypes, and characterization of animal models. Maintains and cares for research mouse colonies involved in cardiovascular projects, including breeding, ear notching, tail clipping,

9. DNA extraction, PCR / genotyping, training mice on the treadmill, feeding and weighing mice on special diets.

10. Performs immunohistochemistry procedures with transgenic animal models of heart disease.

11. Performs Western blot, breeds and genotypes transgenic mice, performs TUNEL staining, calculates myocytes cell size and performs fibrosis measurement.

12. Maintains colony data and provides regular updates on colony status to PI and trainees involved in animal projects.

Maintains Laboratory and statistical data

13. Compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations pertinent to research activity. Maintains data in prescribed format. Assists in interpreting data

14. Under supervision, assists in the conducting of a continuous program of research and development regarding the analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory.

15. Participates in the evaluation of the existing procedures, suggesting revisions where necessary and proposing new procedures where required.

16. Responsible for adhering to proper safety guidelines including radiation, biosafety and lab safety.

17. Monitors inventories of laboratory supplies and reagents. Identifies items that need to be re-ordered.

18. Ensures that laboratory equipment is maintained in good working order

Other Duties

19. Authors and/or co-authors publications under the guidance of mentor.

20. Assists with the preparations of proposals, formal applications, and justification for grant applications.

21. Demonstrates initiative by identifying new tasks that can be performed that will allow scientific staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to concentrate on their projects.
22. Provides general administrative support to the research program run by the PI.

23. May be required to work with radioactive materials.

24. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers’ regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

25. Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate

Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

26. Performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Applicant should have a Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.

Interest and experience in signal transduction/cell biology research and cardiovascular medicine preferred. Must possess good organization and documentation skills and must demonstrate good communication skills in English. Must be comfortable working quickly and accurately in a stressful, deadline driven work environment. Must be able to prioritize and quickly learn new techniques and work independently, with careful attention to detail. Must be able to work additional hours on short notice when necessary to meet key deadlines. Must be continuously accessible by email.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of research instruments. Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending. Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6½ feet. Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone and by e-mail.

Vision capable of viewing computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be available to work flexible hours on short notice, including overtime and some weekends and holidays. Must be willing to work with radioactive materials.
