POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under frequent supervision, perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/ protocols. The Research Technician at Case Western Reserve University will be responsible for conducting cancer research studies to develop strategies for cancer therapy including working on NK therapies and small molecule approaches. The work will involve the use of multiple cancer model systems including leukemia and colon cancer. They will conduct experimental work using cell and animal models. The technician will be guided by the lab PI as well as more senior members of the lab. Key responsibilities will be the culture of tumor cells, the expansion of NK cells, injection of cells and drugs into mice, and monitoring mice for cancer progression. This position will work with animals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- May feed animals, and clean and maintain cages. Assist with the care of animals including tumor monitoring and separation of pups from litters. (15%)
- Perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/protocols. Work will involve culture of cells and mouse handling (30%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Set up specified supplies and equipment according to detailed specifications. Help maintain lab stocks of common reagents. (5%)
- Prepare solutions. Help to prepare lab solutions for reagents commonly used in the lab. (5%)
- Maintain records. Keep detailed written record of experiments performed and the results. (5%)
- May perform inventory control, ordering, and recording of experiments. Assist with ordering of lab reagents as a backup. (5%)
- May operate single controls on equipment and make light repairs. Aid in the upkeep of equipment in the lab. (5%)
- Perform housekeeping tasks. Aid with the organization of reagents and supplies in the lab. (5%)
- Record experimental data; collect/tabulate/calculate. Will keep neat and accurate records of all of the cell and animal experiments that are performed. Will primarily keep data stored electronically. (5%)
- Participate in the organization of the lab and upkeep of shared equipment (5%)
- Purchase routine lab supplies, collect receipts, monitor expenditures. Will assist with the PI and others in the lab with these tasks. (5%)
- Enter sequences into computer; analyzes; perform machine repair. Will assist with entering information from their research into the computer and analyzing the data under the guidance of other lab members. Will do minor machine repairs. (2.5%)
- Extract data for follow-up. Will extract data from previous studies as needed for other lab members and collaborators to perform follow-up studies. (2.5%)
- Perform other duties as assigned (5%).
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.
University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information (several times per year).
External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.
Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information (weekly).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 1 to 2 years of related experience required.
Education: High school education required.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

- Ability to meet consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
- Must demonstrate compliance with CWRU animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
- Must demonstrate compassion for animals within CWRU facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.
- Previous experience working with animals and mammalian cell culture preferred.
- Must be able and willing to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and utilize protective gear to protect the health the animals.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory environment. The employee will be exposed to animals.
