Registered Nurse (RN) job summary
Important functions of the Registered Nurse include monitoring, recording and reporting symptoms or changes in patient conditions. Also, they are tasked with maintaining accurate patient reports and medical histories, administering medication and treatment to patients and observing reactions or side effects.
Registered nurses also perform diagnostic tests, supervise less skilled licensed or certified nurses, CMA’s and CNA’s, prepare patients for examination and treatment. Finally, they advise patients and their families on various health conditions and any other duty that may be included in a registered nurse job description.
Registered Nurse (RN) responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:
- Must function as a team member, team leader and ensure work is accomplished and quality care is delivered
- Administer medications, provide vaccinations and render treatment
- Communicate with physicians, team members, radiologists and other medical professionals
- Collaborate with physicians and staff to create a Plan of Care for each resident
- Consider the age of the patient and his or her emotional stability when determining appropriate treatment
- Create and contribute to the resident medical records as needed
- Respond to inquiries, concerns and complaints from residents and their family members or guardians and direct concerns to appropriate management
- Track and maintain medical supply inventory along with other staff members
- Counsel residents and family members before, during and after treatment
Registered Nurse (RN) qualifications and skills
Critical-Thinking Skills: Registered nurses will need to assess a resident’s health, as well as detect changes in symptoms, health or pain, and will need to know when action is necessary.
Compassion: Nurses help people. You will need to be sympathetic to a resident’s needs and be able to deal with people in various states of pain, trauma and tragedy.
Attention to Detail: Nurses will assess residents, document and follow physician orders, administer medications and work with specific treatments that, if wrong could prove fatal. Attention to detail is crucial.
Organizational Skills: Nurses will face multiple residents, with differing needs, stages of health and risks. Being organized and knowing how to prioritize will be helpful.
Calm Under Pressure: Nurses might face emergency, life-or-death situations. Being able to function in the heat of emergency will be necessary.
Patience: Giving care under stressful circumstances requires patience.
Communication Skills: You will be communicating directly with patients who are scared, in pain, have wounds or have a brain injury such as dementia. Families will have questions and want answers. You will need to be a patient listener and good communicator to help keep everyone calm and help them understand the situation.
Registered Nurse Position Requirements
- Current unencumbered RN license to practice in Nebraska
- We will train newly graduated Nurses
- Excellent customer service skills and a teamwork attitude
- Current CPR Certification and ability to maintain throughout employment
- Ability to communicate positively and effectively with other team members
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule and to fill in when needed and provide RN coverage
- Work scheduled rotating weekends and holidays
- Work 12-hour shifts
- Excellent bedside manner and communication skills
- Ability to explain treatments and conditions to residents of all ages
- Working knowledge of long-term care nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as guidelines that pertain to long-term care is helpful
Follow and enforce all company policies and procedures
