Job description
The Endoscopy RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for all assigned patients undergoing GI procedures or pulmonary studies at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. These procedures are conducted in a variety of locations within the perioperative setting and may be performed with or without sedation/anesthesia. The RN role includes patient procedural prep and intra-procedure support as well as maintenance of this specific service line’s clinical operations (ex: room turnover, supply and equipment checks). The RN utilizes knowledge of physiological status and developmental stages to provide the patient and family with procedure-related education and support and includes the family in the care of the patient.
The Endoscopy RN collaborates with MDs, RNs, Advanced Practice Providers, schedulers, and inpatient staff to coordinate the care of the patient in a fast-paced environment. The RN utilizes knowledge of physiological status and developmental stages to provide the patient and family with procedure-related education and support and includes the family in the care of the patient. The RN delegates responsibilities to others as appropriate. The RN performs these responsibilities in accordance with all policy, procedure, and professional practice guidelines.
About this position:
- Casual RN position
- Day Shift, variable start, and end times
- Must be available to work at least two 8 hour shifts per 4 week period.
- This position is not eligible for benefits.
- Performs advanced monitoring; intervenes as needed; promptly identifies and responds to potential and emergent situations; troubleshoots issues.
- Collaborates with Attending MD to ensure thorough pre-case planning is completed and all anticipated equipment and supplies are in place and/or readily available prior to the start of the procedure.
- Is responsible for pre-procedure patient assessment and carrying out physician orders for all phases of care.
- Is responsible for the correct functioning of equipment and supplies for GI and Pulmonary procedures.
- Participates in the intra and post procedure care of the patient including supporting anesthesia care provider in airway management and altered states of anesthesia.
- Is responsible to assess, plan and teach patient and family about procedure and provides appropriate discharge education and planning.
- Is responsible for the proper handling of specimens from patient procedures, properly identifying, preparing and labeling specimens for the lab per the hospital's specimen management policy.
- Is responsible to perform and assure proper cleaning of endoscopes and other procedural equipment and demonstrate the ability to complete bedside cleaning.
- Is responsible to complete initial and annual training for bedside equipment cleaning and Sedation competency.
- Will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the equipment or software used for patient care, including EPIC, Provation MD, and Pyxis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current MN RN License
- 1+ RN experience in acute care setting
- 1+ RN experience in endoscopy procedures
- BLS
- ACLS (if not currently certified, unit will arrange certification class)
