REPORTS TO: Principal and Assistant Principal of the MACTC

TERMS:
This position is a 184 total paid days position offering full family subscriber medical, dental, and vision benefits. Dental, vision, and life insurance are paid by the district at no cost to the employee. Long term disability insurance paid by the district up to $30 per month. Personal business days and sick time paid. Retirement through the Office of Retirement Services (Pension Plus or Defined Contribution).
SALARY RANGE:
This position is on the Career Tech Center Scale, $46546.13-$86772.88 per year based on education.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:
The Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) counselor will plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive programs of student and career development in the career technical education field. This individual provides program support including coordination of services and opportunities for students to attend the MACTC. The individual with help develop programming that will assist in the retention of MACTC students as well as opportunities beyond the MACTC.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s Degree or higher with valid Counselor certificate or endorsement.
2. Possession of a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate. (Course work in special education preferred.)
3. Knowledgeable and skilled in counseling procedures and career development.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills as well as written and oral communication skills.
5. Exceptional leadership, organizational skills, and public relations skills.
6. Successful teaching or counseling experiences involving secondary students.
7. Skilled in promoting and marketing the MACTC programs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledgeable of State and Federal regulations applicable to the MACTC programming.
2. Knowledge of Michigan Merit Curriculum and College access criteria.
3. Possession of a broad range of computer and software skills.
4. Strong organizational and problem solving abilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Acquires and maintains a thorough knowledge of all laws, rules, regulations, and policies pertinent to the MACTC programs.
2. Provides occupational information, guidance services and individual/group counseling to students for use in planning and developing their career and educational plans.
3. Supervise student registration and retention of students at the MACTC. Ensures eligibility of enrolled students.
4. Closely monitor student progress with program teachers to properly coordinate communication to parents regarding student grades, skill attainment, and attendance.
5. Provide career and college advising to all CTC students, in order to help students develop a comprehensive plan for postsecondary training.
6. Maintain ongoing communication with local counselors, high schools, parents, and MACTC staff.
7. Conduct Muskegon ISD Local Counselor meetings at least two times each year, and meet with local counselors or local district staff as needed, in order to support shared students.
8. Provide documentation needed to complete all State reports.
9. Assists in the implementation of Educational Development Plans (EDP's), Individual Educational Plans (IEP’s), as well as Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP’s) as needed.
10. Assist in marketing and building local industry and community support for the MACTC programs.
11. Create incentive programs to motivate students to attain skills and promote retention of students to become career and technical education completers.
12. Perform other tasks and assumes other responsibilities that ensure the success of the MACTC programs as assigned.
NOTABLE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Some lifting and general mobility around the MACTC and various high school campuses is
required.
TYPICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work is performed on the campus of MACTC. Occasional visits to county high schools will also be required.
EVALUATION:
Employees in this classification are evaluated according to current Board policy.
TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS:
Frequent local travel is required and occasional travel within the State may be necessary, as well.
