In this role, the Scientist owns the initiation and execution of research projects to deliver on the short-term and long-term Ingredient Science strategy for proteins that enable quality growth, value leadership, supply security and sustainability in accordance with Mars Wrigley strategic goals.

The candidate will provide strong expertise and technical leadership at a global level on new ingredient development, new ingredient synthesis routes and functionality in end products in collaboration with Commercial (Procurement), Innovation, other R&D functions, Supply Quality Assurance and Quality and Food Safety. The Scientist also plays a key role in sharing technical knowledge across the organization and mentoring.

What are we looking for?

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Food Science or related field with 3+ years of R&D CPG industry experience or academic laboratory
• Strong technical knowledge of food ingredient quality, functionality and nutritional profile
• Research as evidenced through patents, published literature or ingredient technology commercialized in products
• Demonstrated record of performing research in food or food ingredients
• Travel up to 10%

Preferred Requirements:

• Masters with 2+ years or Ph.D. with 0+ years of industry experience in Biochemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Food Science or related field or academic laboratory
• Strong knowledge of the science of proteins and their quality, functionality and nutritional profile in food
• Previous project management experience

What will be your key responsibilities?

• Initiate and drive programs and projects, focusing on growth, efficiency and future proof of proteins to address short-term and long-term global business needs. Support other ingredient categories as needed.
• Develop new protein solutions (plant-based, etc.) and identify new protein synthesis routes via new/emerging technologies to deliver on our innovation, supply chain and sustainability goals. Provide technical leadership and in-depth knowledge on protein science and functionality in end products internally and outside the organization (conferences, trade shows, etc.).
• Applies robust scientific methodologies and experience to develop research hypothesis and experimental plan to enable the development of novel consumer relevant ingredient solutions.
• Defines project objective, success criteria, IP opportunities, competitive advantages and identifies approaches leveraging both internal and external resources and experts.
• Provide well written technical reports and/or white papers related to projects to make clear recommendations regarding current and novel ingredients.
• Partner with Commercial (Procurement) and Innovation teams to develop strong relationships with key suppliers, research institutes, consultants, etc. to develop and commercialize high quality, innovative, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable ingredients.
• Manage material risk assessments, material specification and supplier quality assurance processes in collaboration with Commercial (Procurement), Supply Quality Assurance and Quality and Food Safety.
• Contribute to horizon scanning initiatives to determine new approaches within existing field to identify new business opportunities.
• Mentor and upskill others on technical leadership, project management, material risk assessment, etc.
