The Senior Design Engineer in the Mountain Bike category will lead the technical development of composite and alloy full suspension and hard tail Mountain Bikes from concept to mass production. They will mentor Associate and Design Engineers to teach best practices and oversee their work.
How You'll Contribute:
- Take ownership of projects from concept through production while mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Work closely with Mountain Bike Core Team to create and validate project requirements. Support Engineering team with proper clearance models and design rules to fulfill project requirements.
- Stay up to date with component and drivetrain technology and disseminate data with revision control within Cannondale's PDM and PLM systems.
- Work collaboratively with Industrial Design, Product Management, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Project Management, and suppliers to meet project time, quality, and budget commitments.
- Collaborate with Cannondale's kinematic and geometry expert to develop frame design skeletons and packaging solutions.
- Design leading-edge bike technologies and industry-leading lightweight frames and components using 3D modeling software.
- Use computational analysis tools (FEA) to refine and optimize engineering design to ensure testing success while pushing the boundaries on lightweight design and performance.
- Create 2D drawings with proper inspection dimensions and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Review designs for adherence to Cannondale Quality requirements, Design for Manufacture, and Design for Assembly.
- Review 2D drawings for all categories to ensure Cannondale engineering best practices and standards are being followed.
- Work closely with Quality Engineering and suppliers to maintain the strictest quality levels through development and production.
- Support Engineering teams to determine the ideal manufacturing process to meet project quality standards, price targets, and timelines.
- Participate in engineering design reviews in all category segments: fit/form/function, structural, design for manufacturing and assembly processes, clearance checks, meeting product specification requirements, and costing.
- Maintain familiarity with internal testing protocols, internal clearance models, and international compliance standards. Update internal documentation as needed.
- Assist Design Engineers in creating qualification test plans that meet international, legal, and Cannondale standards; troubleshoot testing failures and modify designs accordingly.
- Perform research as needed to support new, innovative designs and/or processes.
- Follow internal controls and company policies as set by company and job function.
- Contribute to the success of company by leading or assisting with other projects and tasks as assigned
What You Bring to the Table:
- Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- 7+ years' experience designing bicycle frames or equivalent
- Experience with tube forming processes: bending, butting, forming, forging, gravity casting, and extrusion or composite frame and component design and manufacturing processes
- Strong mechanical aptitude to solve complex packaging, assembly, and mechanism problems
- Superior knowledge of bicycle products and their assembly
- Proficient with SolidWorks 3D modeling software
- Finite Element Analysis skills to analyze Aluminum structures and assemblies
- High level of self-motivation and ability to handle several concurrent projects
- Excellent communication skills and problem-solving abilities
- Work in versatile international teams across time zones
- Ability to drive a company vehicle for transport of employees and equipment to off-site locations.
- English language skills
- Experience designing and developing eBikes
- In-depth knowledge of thermoplastic materials and processing
- Experience with Asian manufacturing a plus
- Chinese and German language skills are a plus
- Knowledge of electric drive systems
- Metal working or fabrication skills
- Experience working with Industrial Designers
- Previous work in a bike shop
