- Environmental Health Inspector full salary range is between $19.72 and $28.59 Hourly
- Environmental Health Specialist full salary range is between $21.74 and $31.52 Hourly

The purpose of this position is to ensure a sanitary, healthy, and environmentally sound City. This is accomplished by investigating and inspecting food service establishments, schools, daycare centers, hospitals, nursing homes, swimming pools and other residential, commercial or industrial property for compliance with health and food safety ordinances. This position also participates in plan review and mosquito abatement activities. This position assists in providing training to new employees, assisting supervisor with administrative tasks and leading special projects.
Reads and interprets various City ordinances and adopted codes; inspects and investigates complaints at food service establishments, daycare centers, swimming pools and other locations for compliance with applicable environmental and public health ordinances.
- Assists with revisions to health and safety policies and ordinances. Issues health permits to operate food service operations and other establishments. Conducts plan review for pools, spas, food establishments, and similar businesses.
- Maintains environmental surveys, records of inspections and action taken; issues citations, as required; prepares documentation; may represent the City in court cases and hearings, when necessary. Conducts inspections and other activities to support the City mosquito management program.
- Makes recommendations to both public and private industry representatives on methods/techniques to modify daily operations in accordance with current health codes. May assist with creating, coordinating, and conducting various educational programs.
- Responds to situations outside normal work hours as required, including but not limited to temporary food events, fire suppression/discharge systems, extensive power outages, sewer overflow, and other public and environmental health emergencies.
- Provides guidance and oversight of assigned programs within the Environmental Health Division; remains current on regulations related to programs. Trains new Health Specialists on proper inspection techniques and department protocols.
Education & Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Bachelor’s degree, plus four (4) years of relevant work experience
Degrees in Biology, Food Science, Chemistry or other Life Sciences are preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certification and Other Requirements
- Valid Class C Driver’s License.
- Must have at least thirty (30) semester hours in a basic or applied science from an accredited college or university.
- Professional Registered Sanitarian Certification through Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
- Pool Operator Certification, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Certified Professional-Food Safety (CP-FS) through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

Health & Dental Insurance
The City of Allen offers a choice of two PPO Medical Plan options for full-time employees. Vision insurance is included through enrollment in either of these plans. Employees also have the option of participating in an indemnity Dental Plan. Coverage is available to all full-time employees and their dependents under these plans at group rates. Employee insurance coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment.
Insurance Coverage
Basic Group Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of one time the annual salary up to a maximum of $250,000 for each benefit.
Long-Term Disability Insurance is provided at no cost to full-time employees.
The City of Allen also offers optional programs that include Short-Term Disability, Voluntary Supplemental Life, Dependent Life and Voluntary AD&D insurance group rates.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Participation in Flexible Spending Accounts through payroll deduction for Health Care and Dependent Care expenses is also available for full time employees.
Wellness Program
The City of Allen administers a wellness program for full-time employees which provides premium reimbursement for participation in various wellness programs throughout the year.
Workers Compensation
All employees are covered by workers compensation for injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Holidays
Employees receive nine paid holidays per year, including one personal day.
Vacation
Employees with less than ten years of service are eligible to earn 120 hours per year. Employees with ten or more years of service are eligible for 160 hours per year.
Sick Leave
Full-time employees on a 40-hour workweek shall accrue 4.62 hours towards sick leave per pay period. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave hours accrued.
Retirement
The City of Allen participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All full-time employees must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7%) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. The City of Allen also participates in Social Security.
Deferred Compensation
The City of Allen offers an optional deferred compensation 457 plan in which employees can contribute a portion of their salary, before taxes, to a retirement account.
Longevity
Employees who have been with the City of Allen at least a year receive $4 per month for every month worked.
