MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in laboratory work.

College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.

JOB DUTIES:

Under supervision, using standard operating procedures, ensures samples are prepared for further analysis, such as weighing, as required. Prepares media and glassware for laboratory analysis, as required.

Works with supervisor, staff and laboratory quality manager to ensure quality assurance and ultimately, improvement, as required under International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 17025. Works to make inventories (equipment and chemical/reagent/supplies) current and complete.

Strives to ensure proper working of section, including participation in the care and maintenance of laboratory equipment; initiates purchasing of laboratory equipment and supplies (including reagent and chemicals/supplies); ensures laboratory and work areas are clean and orderly, etc.

Maintains personal expertise in analytical procedures, instrument technology, quality assurance and improvement through self-motivation. Complies with state and department policies and procedures for analysis of foods. Supports the State Hemp program. Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of the physical or natural sciences.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and material used in the laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Ability to collect, record and analyze laboratory data.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform laboratory tests and analyses.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Ability to comply with strict procedural and quality control/quality assurance guidelines in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Ability to use laboratory computer applications (email, data processing, spreadsheet, database, word processing) in a networked environment.
  • Ability work in a team environment with other analysts.
