Job Summary
This is responsible supervisory work directing law enforcement activities for an assigned shift, staff of police personnel or specialized technical police work of comparable responsibility. An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for assigning and supervising the work of personnel engaged in patrol activities or in police work of a specialized nature. Considerable independent judgment, initiative and understanding must be exercised in interpreting orders, rules and regulations and in meeting emergency situations. Work is performed in accordance with established rules, regulations and instructions from superior officers who review the work through reports, conferences and observation of police efficiency. Police Sergeant must be able to work any shift assigned.
Responsibilities
- Shift supervisor
- Determines personnel and equipment assignments
- Reviews investigation and arrest reports and determines disposition requirements
- Supervises and participates the prevention and investigation of crimes and other offenses against persons and property
- Handles difficult and sensitive situations
- Recommends cases needing additional investigation
- Supervises communications unit
- Ensures incident and accident reports are completed on time per policy
- Assists superior officer(s) in developing and implementing new or revised policies and procedures; interprets and communicates policies and procedures to department employees
- Prepares or directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports
- Performs related work and other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a police officer
- Comply peace officer requirements per the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Act Georgia Law 92A-2100(as amended)
- Two years of college; may be supplemented with the completion and considerable experience in law enforcement work, supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer previous experience at the rank of police corporal
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the campus and surrounding geographic areas
- Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work and training of subordinates and to command their respect
- Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation and to deal firmly yet courteously, with the public under stressful conditions
- Ability to analyze situation quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action on own initiative
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with employees, university officials and the public
- Skill in the use and care of firearms and firm administration of firearms and safety policies
- Skill in first aid training
