Job description
The Lastinger Center for Learning is an education innovation hub within UF's College of Education focused on creating equitable education systems that improve teaching and learning across early childhood and K-12 education. Specifically, the Center targets kindergarten readiness, 3rd-grade reading proficiency, and algebra proficiency as critical milestones in children's educational trajectory that are predictive of success in school and life. The Center works at the nexus of research, practice, and policy to develop sustainable systems that leverage educational technologies and improve the implementation of research-based practices. Housed in one of the nation's elite public research universities, the Center operates as a dynamic, entrepreneurial workplace focused on executing against UF's service mission to strengthen the human condition and improve the quality of life.
New Worlds Reading Initiative
In 2021, the Florida Legislature created the New Worlds Reading Initiative, Florida’s first statewide book distribution program, to provide at-home literacy support for students reading below grade level. Under the initiative, a high-quality, hardcopy book is delivered monthly to eligible students. Their parents are provided resources to help improve their student’s reading skills and instill a love of reading. The Department of Education has designated the Lastinger Center as the Administrator for the program, responsible for fulfilling all the requirements of the initiative.
- Developing, in conjunction with the Just Read, Florida! Office, a selection of books from a variety of genres and covering a range of topics, appropriate for each grade level;
- Facilitating book distribution directly or through an agreement with a book distribution company;
- Developing and distributing marketing materials to help school districts and local partners raise awareness of the initiative;
- Helping school districts identify potential nonprofit partners by maintaining a list of national, state, and local organizations that have experience supporting efforts to distribute books to children
- Developing training materials, including video and text resources, to assist teachers as they engage in reading and improve literacy skills
- Periodically distributing to participating teachers helpful tips and hyperlinks to video modules via text messaging and email.
The UF Lastinger Center seeks a qualified candidate to develop and deliver literacy materials for teachers that are aligned with the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards.
The qualified candidate will have extensive knowledge in the Science of Reading, as well as experience in instructional design.
Responsibilities:
Content Design & Development
- Design professional development learning experiences (face-to-face, hybrid and online) in partnership with the Implementation Design and Content Development teams.
- Assess ongoing needs of participants to inform design changes in training content.
- Participate in Schedule for meetings referencing deliverables (dates, people, materials, other supports).
- Stay abreast of changes and share information from the field to guide ongoing refinement of products and services.
- Develop book-specific teacher reading guides.
Facilitation & Implementation
- Facilitate and support team members facilitating face to face, virtual and online professional development learning experiences or learning showcases.
- Assist in evaluation of professional development offerings, including assessment of communities of practice and coaching videos.
Logistical Support
- Disseminate materials for marketing, recruitment, and project communications in collaboration with other Lastinger teams. Troubleshoot challenges and provide technical assistance as needed to participants
Collaboration
- Collaborate with all Lastinger Center teams to design and promote high quality instructional practices and project implementation success.
- Collaborate to support other Implementation Team members as needed on specific implementation of activities and tasks.
- Engage in work groups and project design as deemed necessary.
- Collaborate as necessary to ensure project expectations are met per the deliverables contained in the Project Charter.
- Maintain documentation and collaborate with other teams to provide documentation as required.

Lastinger Center for Learning supports and promotes a healthy work-life balance. To achieve this, the Lastinger Center offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule that aligns with the university’s Flexibility in the Workplace Policy. Allowing employees to stagger arrival and departure times as necessary and to vary the number of workdays in the office so long as an employee’s FTE commitment is fulfilled within the university workweek. This policy also allows for occasional, incidental remote work based on individual circumstances.
$60,000 - $65,000
Master's degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.
Must have a valid State of Florida driver's license.
- Hold a Florida Reading endorsement
- Experience in content development and/or instructional design
- Strong relational, organizational, and communication skills
