This position is an exciting and new opportunity that is currently part of Medtronic and will move to a to-be-named company we are calling “NewCo”. NewCo will be an independent company with equal partners, Medtronic & DaVita. It will be established in calendar 2023 as a new company (NewCo) formed from Medtronic’s Renal Care Solutions Operating Unit focused on providing innovative technologies to support kidney care patients. While you will start your employment with Medtronic, upon establishment of NewCo your employment will transfer to NewCo and you will no longer be employed by Medtronic.

In this exciting role as the Sr Tooling and molding Engineer, you will be responsible for the management of injection mold tool build programs, overseeing the complete program management from part concept through to full-scale production working with cross-functional teams. You will establish and manage a supply base for high-quality SPI class 101, 102, & 103 injection mold tools as well as highly qualified medical device molding suppliers. You will be responsible for troubleshooting molding and tooling issues and resolve in a timely manner.

A Day in the Life
  • Manage injection mold tool build programs from concept through to production.
  • Audit injection mold tool builders throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia
  • Apply design for manufacture mythologies incorporating predictive engineering tools to retire risk at the earliest opportunity.
  • Conduct mold design reviews with suppliers to ensure that all company tooling specifications are met.
  • Establish injection mold processes using scientific principles such as mold balance experiments, rheology studies, and gate seal experimentation.
  • Establish part measurement techniques for mold steel sizing to achieve short-term mold/process capability of 1.33Cpk or better.
  • Manage project financials (travel, vendor payments, and capital spend forecasting)
  • Key troubleshooter for molding and tooling issues to recover Line Down issues
Must Haves
  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of 4 years of injection molding experience or OR advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience
Nice to Haves
  • 7+ years of experience in injection molding, tool-build management preferred.
  • Injection mold design background.
  • Practical knowledge of mold making and injection molding process.
  • Scientific Injection Molding concepts and use
  • Understanding of Tolerance Schemes and use for metrology output
  • Mold building knowledge including machining tolerances, steels, heat treating, plating, guidance, and stack-up tolerances.
  • Working knowledge of problem solving techniques i.e., process map, risk assessment, cause and effect diagram, Pareto analysis etc.
  • Proficiency in Project management to include negotiation, budget controls, and documentation
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Project and Minitab
