This position is responsible for planning and implementing engaging, productive and challenging lessons for the English Language Institute at Pace University. The Staff Instructor will maintain a clear understanding of the program’s curricular objectives and teaching expectations throughout the year. This position will include teaching up to 18 contact hours per week , 40 weeks per year, including an additional 4 weeks of placement/ advisement, and additional administrative duties as assigned.

Position Duties
Teach up to 18 contact hours per week, 40 weeks per year:
  • Plan and prepare engaging outcomes-based lessons on the given curriculum for the course or program assigned.
  • Implement lessons in multiple formats including in-person meetings in New York City, online via Zoom, and asynchronously using the Pace Classes learning management system (Brightspace) on the stated dates and meeting times for the semester or term taught.
  • Create value-added content presentations in online classes with self-recorded video, presentation software, and Pace University-provided interactive tools.
  • Source authentic materials and resources to supplement the curriculum, student learning, and (when available) assigned textbooks or resources.
  • Use communicative methodology for all English language courses, or a four-skills approach to all content and language integrated learning (CLIL) assignments.
  • Create and administer instructor created assessments based on the course outcomes and objectives using a variety of assessment tools and assignments.
  • Submit required administrative updates and documents by given deadlines, such as but not limited to student academic and attendance concerns, course syllabus and schedule, complete assessment and grading documentation, assessment tools and/or examples, and final grades to the university registrar system.


Administrative duties (17 hours per week), plus 4 weeks of administrative-specific duties including but not limited to:
  • Maintain regular office hours (9a.m. – 5p.m, Monday through Friday) outside of classroom contact hours
  • Collaborate with and mentor part-time staff instructors for academic and administrative tasks
  • Attend all faculty and full-time ELI staff meetings
  • Place and advise prospective and current students throughout the semester

As time permits with course releases, assist the Associate Director of Academics, with departmental tasks including but not limited to:
  • Design or conduct mini-academic support seminars for students (1 per session)
  • Conduct professional development workshops for staff instructors
  • Maintain the ELI Faculty Community on the Pace University LMS
  • Promote English Language Institute (ELI) and International Special Programs (ISP) initiatives
  • Represent the ELI in service to the TESOL field (conferences, publishing, workshops, accreditation reviews, etc.)


Position Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in a university based intensive EFL/ESL program.
  • Experience in teaching across program levels and skills.
  • Experience in communicative language methodology, task based learning, and proficiency in using technology as an integrated component of classroom instruction.
  • Demonstrated collaboration as a member of an instructional team.
  • Native fluency and good command of written and spoken English.
  • Cross cultural sensitivity and strong interpersonal relations.
  • Overseas living and/or teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of systems such as Microsoft 365, web-based scheduling apps, project management software, learning management systems
  • Membership and involvement in professional organizations, such as TESOL, NYSTESOL, etc.
  • Experience preparing an intensive English program for accreditation.
  • Knowledge of educational technology in teaching and administration.

Work Hours
Regular hours 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (may vary slightly depending on teaching schedule).

Salary Range
$55/hr - $90/hr
