POSITION SUMMARY: Are you passionate about mental health and building resiliency in children, families, and communities? Kids’ Health Connections (KHC) is a not-for-profit organization located in Detroit, Michigan. At KHC, we have a culturally diverse staff that works with primary care physicians, health plans, parents, and community agencies in a collective effort to improve the health of children throughout Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties. KHC helps parents and their children get out of their relationship with their family physician by bridging gaps and identifying viable health care solutions. KHC provides health education to families, helps doctors improve the quality of their care, and acts as a voice for issues affecting children’s health. The KHC team works with doctors who refer families for a variety of reasons. These include helping families understand how to manage their child’s asthma through in-home asthma education, improve their lifestyle choices through our FitKids360 program, and the importance of staying up to date on their child’s immunizations.

FitKids360 is an eight-week childhood obesity intervention program that targets children 5-17 years old who have a Body Mass Index in the 85th percentile or above and are referred by their primary care physician. Throughout the eight weeks, children and their families learn about nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral health topics. FitKids360 in Detroit has now run 49 classes and has a long waitlist of families wanting to join the holistic program.

Fit Families: Healthy Minds is a 7-week, family-based program, focusing on the importance of having healthy minds and mental wellness. During this program, families will learn about mental health topics such as stress, conflict, self-esteem, and more. Coping strategies are taught to reduce stress, how to manage/resolve conflict in your everyday life and explore self-esteem building practices. This program will provide different resources in the community that can help improve mental health and wellbeing.

REQUIREMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES: Behavioral Health Teacher Requirements:

• Possession of a social work degree, or degree in a related field (Master’s degree optional)
• Background in counseling or therapy
• Working with or teaching children is preferred
• Willing to travel to different locations in the Detroit area
• Must have week-day evening availability
• Bilingual is a plus

Behavioral Health Teacher Duties:

• Prepare and deliver weekly behavioral lectures and activities to families using FitKids360 curriculum
• Prepare interactive lessons around topics such as bullying, social media, self-esteem, and more
• Be available for questions from families and open to working one-on-one with children

Behavioral Health Teacher Hours:

• One evening per week for 8-weeks at a time, 3-5 hours per week (includes class and preparation time)

SALARY: This position pays $24.00 an hour and operates as an Independent Contractor
