Position Overview:

The Terminal Manager is responsible for safely, accurately and efficiently managing all terminal operations to achieve the desired departmental outcomes.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for the safety of the work crews, ensuring safety standards are followed;
  • Responsible for all activities within the respective terminals (e.g., CC or GCHI);
  • Regular and frequent (e.g., at least daily) communication to the Assistant General Manager with regard to personnel and equipment requirements and availability;
  • Continuously works to improve QHSE and efficiency within the respective terminals;
  • Oversees equipment/gear and reports/requests replacement when/if deficiencies are discovered;
  • Supervises/manages employees and responsible for rewards, corrective actions, guidance, training, merit/status changes on employees working within the respective terminals;
  • Maintains a current schedule of all operations within the respective terminals and communicate same, as well as any changes, to site management;
  • Provides daily assignments and direction to employees;
  • Creates/builds ship files immediately upon notification of scheduled call at the respective terminal;
  • Liaises with vessel agents and representatives regarding ETA, working hours, etc.
  • Closes out ship files immediately following vessel completion at the respective terminals and forward the information to cargo services in a timely manner;
  • Oversees Terminal Supervisors to ensure terminal logs are completed accurately, timely, and forwarded to cargo services for processing.

Candidate Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required; Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Administration or related field, preferred;
  • Three years of stevedoring and marine terminal operations experience, required;
  • Two years of supervisory experience preferred;
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment; must include knowledge of Excel skills;
  • Required to obtain a TWIC card;
  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish preferred;
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in order to communicate with internal and external customers, at all organizational levels;
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Proven ability to think logically, excellent analytical, critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills;
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Deadline-driven and provide a quality product/service;
  • Self-motivated and proactive;
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • Team player and can-do attitude;
  • Self-starter and able to complete work with minimal supervision and independently handle daily tasks while also understanding the escalation process for assistance and knowing the limits of his/her authority;

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Employee is continuously required to sit;
  • Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, bend forward, squat, twist, pinch, and reach overhead;
  • Employee may be required to reach forward, sit, grasp and exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion and finger dexterity; eye-hand and eye-hand-foot coordination may also be required;
  • Employee is frequently required to talk and hear;
  • Employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push and pull up to 30 pounds;
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus;
  • The employee is required to climb 50 ft+ vertical ladder;
  • The employee is frequently required to work at heights and in confined spaces;
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment but could also involve being near moving mechanical parts;
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to inclement weather/elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, airborne particles, smoke, unpleasant odors, toxic or caustic chemicals;
  • Noise level exposure may be moderate to high;
  • Local and non-local travel may be required (approximately 10% of the time);
  • Must be able to work extended hours, weekends or holidays, as needed.

Ideal Candidate description:

The successful candidate will be a marine terminal operations professional with at least three years of relevant experience. S/he will possess proven leadership skills and the ability to effectively communicate across the entire organization, from the longshoremen working at the terminals, to colleagues on the Management Team. S/he will also interact extensively with customers and representatives outside the organization. S/he must possess sound decision making and risk management skills to benefit both the customer and the Company.
