Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Theatre Director reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Student Life & Engagement. Director is directly responsible for maintaining all aspects of the MFA Theatre by coordinating with Physical Plant and the appropriate departments for any and all events that occur at the MFA Theatre. This includes hiring crews, lighting, sound, recording, rigging and maintenance schedules for the MFA theatre. Also the Theatre Director will be responsible for designing light plots and scene designs as needed.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • The Theatre Director’s areas of specialization are organization for and execution of: rigging, lighting, sound, recording, stage management and multimedia for productions at Laredo College Martinez Fine Arts Theater.
  • Attend meetings called by the President, Vice-President of Student Success and Enrollment, Associated Vice President of Student Life and Engagement and Director of Event Services and Martinez Fine Arts.
  • Participate in committee assignments.
  • Organize and schedule all productions in the Martinez Fine Arts Theatre.
  • Be able to work seven days a week for periods of time with just compensation.
  • Participate in college and civic functions as required.
  • Participate in departmental activities.
  • Implement and execute maintenance schedules for the MFA Theatre’s three main operating systems: sound, lights, and rigging.
  • Coordinate with Physical Plant for HVAC, building maintenance and the load in/load out of events.
  • Facilitate the needs of LC events and outside events with equipment and technicians.
  • Prepare invoices for outside users of the theatre.
  • Maintain the budget for the MFA Theatre.
  • Continue to make technological advances in lighting, sound, and theatrical processes.
  • Implement and maintain the booking policy and priority for the MFA Theatre.
  • May teach courses in stage craft: Drama 1330 and Drama 2331 with adjunct salary compensation. Prepares, administers and grades examinations. Counsels students; notifies students and/or counselors of frequent absences, failures or necessary make-up work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Event Services and Martinez Fine Arts, Associate Vice President of Student Life and Engagement, Vice President of Student Success and Enrollment, and College President.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in theater or equivalent.
  • Experience in all aspects of setting the stage for music, theatre, dance and corporate type events.
  • Experience in managing and instructing lighting crews, carpenters, sound technicians, and rigging crews is a must.
  • A minimum of four years’ experience in theatre production
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in theater

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A thorough understanding of lighting, sound, rigging and event production required.
Ability to operate specialized instruments and equipment such as; dimmer racks, lighting consoles, sound consoles, recording equipment, visual aids, and the rigging systems.
Ability to build sets and scenery for plays, operas, dance recitals, and other events of community enrichment.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.

Special Conditions

Immediate supervisor may assign other duties. May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed. May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed. Be in good health. Must not be absent frequently from classes or work because of poor health. Must be able to work at night and put in long hours for rehearsals, set builds, load in/load out of shows, lighting hangs and sounds checks.
