The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for a Truck Driver for the Streets Division of Public Works.
This position requires a valid Idaho Commercial Driver's License, Class A, with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement.
This position performs skilled duties related to the operation of a dump or flat-bed truck in transporting loose material, sand, gravel, blacktop, and other materials and equipment essential in construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets and storm drain systems. Operates plow truck, street sweeper, flusher truck, roller, sanders and loaders in performing snow removal and various seasonal projects. Works under the general supervision of the Streets Lead Operator or Streets General Foreman and works under the close supervision of a Streets Equipment Operator II on a project by project basis. May provide close supervision to a Laborer(s) or Seasonal Employee on a project by project basis.
Transports construction materials and equipment to designated work sites; positions truck for efficient loading by power shovel, skid steer, backhoe, or loader, etc.; operates flat-bed truck in hauling lumber, cement, steel, tools and other equipment.
Operates truck with plow or sweep installed to windrow snow for removal; may operate dump truck under a traveling snow loader; catches snow and transports to dump sites; performs various seasonal duties, assists with emergency situations, flood prevention, sand bagging, etc.
Operates sand and salt truck for de-icing of streets; operates flusher and sprinkler trucks for dust abatement; tows heavy equipment on trailer; hauls materials for overlay and patching of streets; makes complete pot hole repairs during traffic movement; operates sidewalk sweeper and skid steer; operates crack sealer for repair of streets; assists with contract labor and may give supervision to contract employees.
Makes daily check of oil, water, tires and services with fuel to prepare for daily work assignments; keeps notes of needed repairs or maintenance.
Performs a variety of manual tasks as needed; shovels and levels dirt, gravel, asphalt and other materials, cleans up work sites
May be required to operate a loader with plow or road grader for snow removal, a street sweeper to clean and groom roadways in an assigned area; cleans, services and makes minor adjustments according to manufacturers specifications; maintains records of maintenance and street sweeping operations; makes minor repairs to equipment, such as replacing gutter brooms, curtains on pick-up head, belt adjustments on blower fan, gutter broom height and angle for sweeping and using check list in operator’s manual.
Performs related duties as required.
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school with sufficient educational background to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform the above and related duties; AND B. One (1) year experience in the operation of heavy-duty double-axle trucks and related equipment; OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of operation procedures of heavy-duty trucks; some knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to above duties; some knowledge of laws and regulations governing the operation of related equipment; some knowledge of street construction, repair and maintenance equipment and materials.
Some skill in the operation of heavy-duty trucks.
Ability to follow basic work routines requiring simple verbal or written instructions; ability to perform minor preventive maintenance on related equipment; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to adapt to special emergency assignments; ability to work in various weather conditions and extremes; ability to perform strenuous manual labor; ability to develop effective working relationships with fellow employees and Supervisors.
3. Special Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid Idaho Commercial Driver's License, Class A, with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement.
- Must work on a twenty-four (24) hour stand-by shift or on call basis.
- May be required to become Flagger Certified.
- Residency Requirement: Shall be expected, within six months of hire, to establish residence within a 45-minute notification response zone from the Street Division Administration Building.
Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc.(moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally moving up to 80 pounds). Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, discriminating thinking. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance.
