The Irvine Ranch Water District is accepting applications for a Vehicle Equipment Mechanic in the Fleet Services Department. The successful candidate will perform preventive maintenance, major mechanical and systems diagnostics and repair of light, medium and heavy vehicles, and equipment. Maintain productivity level equal to or above industry standard. Maintain preventive maintenance, repair, and inspection records per federal, state, and local agency requirements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a skilled, journey level position in this job series. Under general supervision, incumbents at this classification perform maintenance, repair, modification and fabrication of fuel and water systems, light and medium vehicles, commercial vehicles etc. This classification differs from the Senior Vehicle Equipment Mechanic in the skill level required and the complexity of assigned work.

Summary of Duties

  • Perform maintenance and repair on light and medium vehicles, and equipment. Servicing of vehicles and equipment task include, but not limited to, changing oil and filters, lubricating, checking systems for proper adjustment, fueling, and washing vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and fuel system malfunctions of vehicles and other mechanical equipment using diagnostic equipment and shop tools.
  • Perform all repairs, replacement, or adjustment of vehicle and equipment systems, such as brake overhaul, clutch and transmission repair, general overhaul, and major tune-ups.
  • Perform preventive maintenance safety inspections.
  • Perform service, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel and water systems.
  • Perform welding and fabrication for vehicle and equipment repairs and systems modifications.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on commercial vehicles, construction equipment, and specialty equipment, under minimal supervision.
  • Service, maintain and repair hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel water systems, and assist with major repairs. Install cellular telephone hardware in District vehicles.
  • Read and interpret schematics and technical drawings, shop manuals and repair guides for mechanical specifications, and instructions on how to adjust and/or repair vehicles and equipment.
  • Per applicable job level, required to supply appropriate tools, not including specialty tools or testing equipment.
  • Provide new equipment orientation.
  • Maintain fuel dispensing and vehicle cleaning systems.
  • Provide emergency road call service.
  • Ensure the professional appearance of all District vehicles and equipment.
  • Comply with District safety work-related practices and attend relevant safety training.
  • Participate on process teams and internal/external committees and organizations.

Qualifications

Education:
  • High school graduation or equivalent required. For degrees obtained outside of the U.S., an official equivalency evaluation is required.

Experience
:
  • Minimum five (5) years related hands-on experience at journeyman level on light and medium vehicles and equipment required.
  • Knowledge of current vehicle technology, on-board computerized systems, brake systems, maintenance programs, specialty, and safety equipment, etc.
License and Certification:
  • Valid Class "C" California Driver's License
  • Class "A" California Driver's License required within (1) year of hire date.

Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a routine basis. Ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, twisting, and pulling. Ability to work in confined spaces such as engine compartments, etc. and work at a variety of angles and positions.

Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under sometimes uncomfortable conditions with exposure to environmental factors such as noise, chemicals, toxins, hazardous materials and conditions, extreme temperatures, electrical voltage, explosives, fire, heights, high pressure systems, disease, wildlife or moving machinery.
