Job Description

Position Overview:

FIS seeks a dynamic, results-oriented professional dedicated to educational equity, and family and community engagement, who is interested in supporting the mission, vision, and ongoing development of the organization. This individual will take the lead to establish and cultivate our partnership and support base with school districts, government agencies, partner organizations, foundations, and other entities and individuals. Additionally, this position will also be responsible for leading the organization’s work as a lead partner of the California statewide Community Engagement Initiative.

A major part of this position’s responsibilities will be to represent and lead FIS’s work in its role as a lead partner of the California statewide Community Engagement Initiative (CEI). As a member of the CEI Lead Agency Consortium which includes the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE), San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS), and the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), FIS is responsible for project management, professional development, and overall execution of this statewide initiative. This individual will supervise workflow and staff associated and working on this important initiative. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the President & CEO.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the executive team to facilitate the organization’s formulation of strategy, planning of work, and monitoring of progress towards set goals and deliverables.
  • Play a major role in supporting the CEO with board relations, including providing reports and preparing for Board meetings.
  • Grow organization’s impact and revenue by supporting the Training and Capacity Building Unit with income generation, program planning and program implementation.
  • Represent FIS in collaboratives, coalitions and conferences focused on family and community engagement. Support with the management of part-time staff, interns, or consultants, as warranted.
  • Support the development of new, and the revision of existing family engagement curriculums, tools, and resources (for in-person and virtual settings). Collaborate in the planning, coordination, and implementation of trainings and workshops for school/district/county office of education and agency staff around family engagement strategies and curricular-based programs. Keep abreast of literature and research relevant to adult learning theory, family and community engagement, and training strategies.
  • Provide technical assistance support to school/district/county office of education agency staff on issues of family and community engagement (e.g. focus groups, SWOT Analysis, professional learning networks, webinars, one-one-one support, etc.). Conduct capacity support and family engagement assessments of schools and districts and deliver tailored capacity support plans.
  • Perform other duties as requested and relevant to the organization’s function.
  • For CEI:
  • Overall Initiative Lead: Lead and manage the Community Engagement Initiative on behalf of FIS. Work collaboratively with the CEO, Lead Agency Partners, and other FIS staff to ensure all CEI goals and deliverables are met.
  • Project Management: Develop scope of work, facilitate, and monitor project implementation. In collaboration with staff from the Lead Agency Consortium, 1. Support the design and implementation of the initiative including but not limited to the Professional Leading and Learning Networks (PLLN) and the Professional Leading and Learning Exchange (PLLX), 2. Plan, develop and co-lead both internal and external meetings, 3. Provide ongoing support and technical assistance to the facilitators and participants of the PLLN and PLLX, 4. Represent FIS at local, statewide and national meetings and conferences, 5. Develop/manage data collecting for this initiative to understand results and impact.
  • Data Management/Analysis: Support and provide guidance for the collection of data on this project in order to write the final report that describes best practices and impact of the work.
  • Professional Development: Share lessons learned from the Community Engagement Initiative with FIS staff and consider implications for the work of the organization. Collaborate in the planning, coordination, and implementation of professional development for school/district/county office of education and agency staff around family and community engagement strategies and promising practices. Keep abreast of literature and research relevant to adult learning theory, family and community engagement, improvement science, the Local Control Funding Formula (and the Local Control Accountability Plan), and training strategies.

Skills/Qualifications:

This is a great position for a professional with demonstrated experience in strategic planning, partnership development, and performance management. Knowledge in family and community engagement, school improvement strategies, school staff professional development, and curriculum development will be helpful. Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5 years of experience. An advanced degree is preferred.

  • A degree/qualification, preferably in education or a related field
  • Adept experiences in project management, partnership development, strategic planning
  • Beneficial to have experiences in curriculum development, professional development, especially in the field of family/community engagement
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of the family/community engagement field, adult-learning strategies, and improvement science
  • Strong project management experience, adhering to project deadlines/budgets and ensuring high quality deliverables
  • Exceptional people skills and the ability to build trust among staff, senior management, the FIS board and external partners. A team-player who can build a sense of community among staff and partners
  • Ability to convey ideas and communicate concepts in writing with clarity and accuracy
  • High degree of flexibility with an ability to make recommendations and gain buy-in to advance agency goals
  • Excellent listening and public speaking skills
  • Commitment to collaboration, teamwork, and accountability to oneself and others
  • Culturally competent with the ability to seamlessly adapt in multicultural, multi-ethnic environments
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings, and travel as necessary
  • Access to a car, possession of a valid driver’s license, and proof of automobile insurance
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is desirable
