What Success Looks Like In This Job

To act as liaison between law enforcement, the criminal justice system and victims to ensure maintaining of County, State, and Federal Laws.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Be available during your scheduled on-call shifts to respond on-scene or by phone to assist victims of and/or witnesses to criminal and critical incidents.
  • Be available to assist other staff when demands on the VSU exceed the typical on-call schedule coverage including but not limited to multiple calls for service at the same time, large-scale events, staff personal emergencies, or to assist another agency when requested.
  • Daily review of incident reports to determine which cases fall under the purview of the VRA and will need follow-up services per the guidelines of the Victims’ Rights Act.
  • Complete follow-up services on incident reports that fall under the purview of the VRA. Follow-up services include but are not limited to the following: contact victims by phone/email, answer case related questions and addressing victim/witness concerns, provide resources and referrals as needed, send via postal service victims’ rights in writing and other material as appropriate, attending to incidents of returned mail as appropriate, assist with the completion of crime victim compensation applications, and address safety concerns.
  • Upon completion of follow-up services, information describing resources provided, should be entered into the client management system.
  • Log daily activities and follow-up work including start time and end time of each service completed, a case number for reference, and details of actions taken.
  • Assist with the volunteer program and mentoring individuals as needed
  • Attending volunteer monthly meetings
  • Attend Detective Division, other agency, and some community-based meetings as scheduled
  • Maintain confidentiality of all case work and contact with victim/witnesses from outside entities to ensure the integrity of case investigations.
  • Incident reports and other sensitive documents should be destroyed immediately per office guidelines to maintain continued confidentiality of client information
  • Transport children, victims, and/or witnesses when appropriate.
  • Participate in VSU related presentations by assisting with the planning, execution of, and all other responsibilities necessary with attending community and agency events, trainings, and educational programs.
  • Assist all Sheriff’s Office employees with fulfilling the requirements of and maintaining compliance with the Victims’ Rights Act.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications for Success

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years prior experience as a Victim Advocate

More Qualifications for Success

  • Knowledge of computers and office equipment
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Provide direct crisis interventions with victims of crime
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality beyond the normal scope of employment
