Position Information


The Water Sewer Streets (WSS) Bureau is seeking a dynamic Water Distribution Team Lead to supervise 13 technicians that provide and ensure an adequate supply of quality water for domestic services and fire protection.

The water distribution staff will perform operation, maintenance, replacement, repairs, and new installations of water supply, pumping and distribution system. Additional duties may include water system inspections, preventive maintenance programs, pressure regulating valves, leak investigations, customer service, dispatching and snow removal support/assistance.

Major Job Duties:


  • Schedule crew work and ensure the crew is able to complete work safely using appropriate technical equipment and following applicable County regulations, laws, and accident prevention measures;
  • Provide training and monitoring employees in the use of a variety of specialized equipment, technical procedures, and safety methods;
  • Supervise Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System to monitor water distribution;
  • Respond and mobilize the team in emergency situations and resolve site issues as they arise;
  • Ensure resources, supplies, tools, materials, and equipment are available;
  • Coordinate with engineering and technical staff in troubleshooting system operation and planning and supporting work efforts;
  • Collaborate with neighboring jurisdictions on water supply and backup operations;
  • Perform administrative functions such as time reporting, activity reports, billing coordination, and personal injury, accident, and vehicle reports;
  • Interact with citizens, contractors, Miss Utility locators, engineers, and surveyors; and on-site facility maintenance staff; and
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:


  • High School Diploma/equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of experience in water distribution, water utility maintenance, water systems or related trades work; and
  • Experience providing leadership to trades workers and/or managing trades projects.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience operating maintenance management software, SCADA, and office administration software;
  • Providing maintenance and operation of water valves and fire hydrants;
  • Performing applicable administrative functions;
  • Possession of a Virginia Water Works Operator Class 5 license; and
  • Possession of a CDL A or B.

Special Requirements


  • The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

  • Work is performed in a combination of office and outdoors environments. Outdoor conditions may include all types of weather, moving traffic, exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.

Additional Information


Work hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; however, the employee may be required to work other shifts and overtime as needed. Must be available for call back, working on call, during weekends, holidays, and emergencies.
