Fairfax County’s Wastewater Management Program is a nationally recognized Utility of the Future and its wastewater treatment plant, the 67 million gallon per day Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant, is a multiple year NACWA Platinum Award winning facility. Under the direction of the Plant Maintenance Supervisor, performs the following functions:

  • Performs all welding work on industrial equipment and materials.
  • Measures devices and gauges to determine thickness and size of metal.
  • Identifies welding supplies, tools, and equipment,
  • Uses gasoline/diesel welding equipment.
  • Maintains stock inventories of welding supplies and materials.
  • Transports, and delivers welding equipment, tools and forklift supplies using utility vehicle.
  • Operate small pallet jacks, hoist etc.
  • Perform layouts and sketches requirements to perform welding duties and/or projects.
  • Re-faces, modifies or fabricates parts for equipment and attachments.
  • Performs corrective and emergency repairs to equipment.
  • Performs light machine work using lathe, milling machine and drill press.
  • Performs work using acetylene and cutting torches.
  • Performs work using precision measurement tools such as micrometer, dial indicator and torque wrench.
  • Utilizes wastewater related computer and software for administrative and work related tasks.

Illustrative Duties

  • Welds and brazes metal to repair broken or cracked objects or to fabricate new parts and equipment;
  • Uses acetylene, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes;
  • Works with steel, aluminum, brass and cast iron and may perform soldering;
  • Performs lay-outs and sketches required in the execution of projects;
  • Measures, cuts metal stock to size, cleans, assembles or positions work pieces;
  • Sets up and adjusts welding equipment, and performs bead welding, tack welding, brazing, flame cutting, heat treating, plasma cutting, chipping or grinding off excess weld slag or spatter;
  • Reviews and interprets blue prints in order to fabricate materials for required specifications;
  • Welds pipe and pressure vessels such as boilers, headers, and hot water storage tanks;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials;
  • Performs preventative maintenance and emergency repair on equipment and operator maintenance on vehicle;
  • Maintain stock inventory of welding supplies and materials;
  • Maintains records and processes reports of work accomplished and materials used;
  • Prevents and mitigates any environmental impact associated with mechanical/welding activities, accidents or emergency situations;
  • Instruct trades helpers and/or apprentice welders;
  • Exercises safety in dealing with hazardous welding by-products and participates in safety training;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the welding trade;
  • Thorough knowledge of standard operating procedures, training manuals and safety requirements;
  • Knowledge of mechanics and hydraulics;
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards, applicable safety practices and emergency response procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of chemicals and their associated hazards, personal protective equipment required, safety precautions and emergency treatment;
  • Knowledge of acetylene and electrical welding equipment Working knowledge of local, state and national codes;
  • Ability to use precision measurement tools, hand and power tools, equipment, and materials pertinent to the trade;
  • Ability to fully plan and perform work of the trade;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, blueprints and manufacturers' and repair manuals;
  • Ability to estimate time and material needs, determine when repair is not economically practical, And to perform routine clerical tasks and arithmetical computations;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, supplemented by (1) completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program with some successful experience in performing journeyman-level work, or (2) varied and responsible journeyman-level experience in the welding trade, or which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; plus two years of experience as journey-level welder using various welding methods.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience using tools and equipment used in welding maintenance and repair. Skills in diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of equipment. Ability to read, understand and follow manufacturers service and repair manuals. Ability to keep records and write work related reports, Ability to use hand and power tools skillfully, efficiently and safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift, carry, & handle items weighing up to 75 pounds. Must be able to bend, stoop, work in tiring and confined spaces. Ability to work from ladders, steps, platforms, and extensions. Ability to operate power cutting tools, band saw, grinder, etc. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
