Nature and Scope:
Under the direction of the Associate/Executive Director, the Wellness Director is responsible for implementing day to day operations including management of staff for the branch. The Wellness Director will supervise branch staff and will be responsible for program planning, development and delivery of programs, marketing and promotion, administration, facility/equipment maintenance, and budget and risk management. This position will also provide leadership to the staff and community phase of the branch’s Why It Matters Annual Campaign. Staff selection, training and supervision using a value-centered approach are necessary. This position primarily focuses on the member experience and, as such, requires a person with exceptional skills in human relations. This position must perform program responsibilities in accordance with the policies, goals, mission values and objectives established by the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA. Emphasis will be placed on the development and/or expansion of current/future programs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two (2) or more years of supervision experience required.
- An Associate’s degree required and a Bachelor’s degree preferred in exercise science, physical education, exercise psychology, behavioral science, or a health-related field.
- High degree of human relation skills: Ability to effectively communicate and manage information to peers, staff and volunteers.
- Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers, partner organizations and the general public.
- Exemplify YMCA ideals, leadership qualities and a professional image.
- A working knowledge of computers: MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and database management.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem solve and possess effective time management skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health, wellness and group exercise program administration.
- Current approved CPRO/AED and O-2 certifications (can achieve within first 90 days of employment) and renew them annually prior to date of expiration. Updated licenses shall be uploaded via LCDC.
- Pass the State of Georgia criminal background check and drug test.
- Must obtain/maintain full access to Y-Link (link.ymca.net) and to Workday.
- Fiscal budgeting experience required.
YMCA/ACE online certification and supplemental courses required by Y-USA within 60 days of hire date.- A current national group exercise/personal training certification is preferred from one of the national organizations, which are recognized by Y of the USA, e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA.
- Must maintain certifications by uploading continuing education credits via the Y Learning and Career Development Center (lcdc.yexchange.org) prior to date of expiration.
- Must attend Initial Coach Approach training within three months of hire date.
- Must have a background/experience in staff team development and relationship management.

Responsibilities:
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the Wellness Department, including employees and volunteers.
- Supervise staff including schedules, staff coverage, and time tracking.
- Supervise wellness coaches, being responsible for delivery of signature wellness programs and personal training.
- Develop, manage and evaluate department budgets within the approved margins to meet branch goals.
- Create, maintain and evaluate a preventive maintenance plan for all equipment and assist in all planning for equipment purchase and replacement.
- Collaborate with the Membership Director to develop and implement a plan to attract and recruit new members and corporate partnerships, in addition to managing strategies to retain current members.
- Foster a climate of innovation and conduct pilots for new programs; develop plans and manage best practices through engagement of the staff team.
- Will become trained in Weight Loss for Life curriculum and is able to support coaches and to assist in leading group sessions.
- Supervise and monitor all activities relating to standardize association wellness programs, and follow best practices and protocols, which include staffing, scheduling, accountability, and reports.
- Supervise and monitor all activities relating to the Wellness Center and Group Fitness Studios.
- Dedicate 20 hours per week to direct delivery of key programs and initiatives.
- Maintain a new exerciser caseload of 50 active participants.
- Supervise and monitor all activities related to computerized fitness-management station (may include monthly reports, termination reports, top performers lists, etc.).
- Implement reviews and revise all aspects of program relative to quality, character development and satisfaction from sign-up and enrollment to assessment of program delivery.
- Serve on the Wellness Cabinet and act as a liaison with appropriate professional groups in the community and serve on Metro Task Forces as assigned.
- Responsible for managing appointment schedules, class rosters and class participation, monthly.
- Identify best practices and strategies around successful program implementation through effective problem solving, strategic planning, goal setting and critical thinking.
- Orient new staff to association and branch procedures.
- Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
- Promotion of new classes and events.
- Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned.
- Monitor all group exercise classes on a weekly/monthly basis and adjust as needed to maintain a higher percentage of classes in the green & yellow vs. red, Cost per Head category. Percentage targets to be identified by leadership and the cabinet.
- Supervise group exercise instructors, being responsible for having all classes led by an instructor or sub, hiring qualified personnel to do so when necessary.
- Develop and monitor attendance of group exercise schedule, making adjustments to incorporate new classes into the schedule and to fit member's needs following the recommendations of the YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Metro Atlanta.
- Use appropriate association forms and documents for hiring and onboarding of staff within required HR practices.
- Inventory, inspect, repair, replace, and/or provide exercise equipment for group exercise classes and wellness floor within scope of the budget.
- Monitor all wellness staff certifications and expiration dates. All instructors must have current Y-USA Health & Wellness courses; acquiring and maintaining a nationally recognized group exercise certification is highly desirable.
- Publish a monthly schedule of group exercise classes for members including class name, time, description of class, and instructor.
- Evaluate staff performance and skills at least once each year.
- Develop, manage and evaluate department budgets within the approved margins to meet branch goals.
- Monitor progress towards branch’s goals by running and reviewing all necessary reports.
- Provide leadership and assist in supporting the Y’s presence in the community; including special events, community outreach activities, and leading staff and volunteers to support the “WHY IT MATTERS” annual campaign.
- Coordinates marketing efforts to maximize enrollments and provides ongoing support to the Director on related issues.
- Support branch operations in the form of Director on Duty, branch engagement opportunities, etc.
