Part-Time MENTOR for Restorative Justice Program

The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) is the largest not-for-profit provider of quality education, employment, and health and recreation programs in the impoverished neighborhoods of the North Bronx, serving the needs of more than 35,000 residents each year. The Mentor will work intensively alongside the Program Director to promote changes in a scholar’s attitude, values, and behaviors. They will also focus on social-emotional growth, alternative-thinking workshops, mentoring circles, and community services activities--, which can increase self-worth and help the scholars in times of stress and crisis. The mentors will help the scholars learn how to deal with stress and conflict in a non-destructive manner and will support and encourage the young person to complete their restorative justice agreement, thereby helping them to be accountable for their actions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate restorative justice circles and family team meetings
  • Conduct group sessions utilizing trauma-informed and evidence-based curriculum
  • Work as part of a team with fellow mentors, the scholar’s family, probation officer, counselors, and community agencies/organizations to help the scholars become accountable and to understand the impact of his or her behavior on the community
  • Attend and participate in workshops in the areas of Preventative Services, Life Skills, Leadership, and Life Redirection. Collaborate with Program Director to identify opportunities for civic engagement, activities, and community service.
  • Facilitate regular meeting opportunities for scholars to reflect, learn from each other, and be supported in their development relating to harm repair
  • Other activities and duties, as needed.

Qualifications-

  • High School Diploma, or Associate in education, human services, criminal justice, youth development, or related field preferred.
  • Training in youth development and the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • High level of organization, strong time management, record keeping, and computer skills.
  • Self-motivation, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to relate well with youth, and high standards for maintaining personal boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Flexible schedule; some evening and weekend work may be required based on individual referrals.

Hourly Rate: $18 - $20 an hour commensurate with education and experience
