Preferred Qualifications:

Supervisory or Management Experience
Advanced Degree
Experience with negotiating contracts, such as nondisclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, and university research agreements
Familiarity with coordination of internal departments at a university, such as finance, compliance, IT, etc.
Familiarity with AUTM and or UIDP perspectives on Industry Sponsored Research in Academia
Experience with contracts with FAR and DFAR clauses

Job Description:

The Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIC) comprises the Iowa State University Research Foundation and the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer. OIC evaluates and develops intellectual property strategies for technology emerging from the research at ISU and the Ames National Lab and executes partnerships for their commercial development while managing industry relations for sponsored research projects.

The Assistant Director, Industry Contracts, supervises professional staff that negotiate pre-partnered terms and conditions with commercial entities for research and technology commercialization. This includes strategies to negotiate sponsored contracts, material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other similar agreements on behalf of the University. Ensures compliance with existing intellectual property portfolio, applicable policies, agency guidelines, and government regulations. Manages agreements for select departments and external partners.

Example of Duties

  • Reviews, drafts, negotiates, and executes contracts and agreements related to sponsored activity.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert.
  • Creates internal policies and procedures.
  • Develops relationships with corporate partners to ensure compliance with agreements.
  • Manages audits and compliance and oversees portfolios
  • Manages finances and prepares projections for faculty
  • Develops intellectual property strategies.
  • Supervises commercialization and other professional staff.

  • Understands linkage between daily activities and achievement of annual objectives of department/work unit and explains to direct reports
  • Focus on ISU’s mission and meeting department or work unit goals
  • Supervises a small department or work team
  • Often is a working supervisor with direct, previous experience performing work of those supervised
  • Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel; may share part of responsibility with higher level management
