Assistant Director of Research
Job description
The incumbent in this new position will be responsible for identifying opportunities to pursue sponsored research grants and contracts at both federal- and state-level agencies. The Assistant Director of Research will then work with appropriate University personnel to draft and finalize submission of those proposals. A secondary responsibility will be to research opportunities and draft proposals to seek funding from foundations and corporations that are philanthropic in nature, serving to advance the mission of the University.
Reporting Responsibilities:
- Identifying funding opportunities at federal and state agencies, particularly in response to Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) focused on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. University-relevant opportunities exist at the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration, Agriculture, and elsewhere.
- Assist with identifying the appropriate campus Principal Investigator(s) to lead projects and work with them to draft and finalize proposals.
- Assist faculty members who themselves seek grants to advance their research objectives.
- Identify and respond to requests from the Vice President for University Relations to pursue philanthropic foundation and/or corporate grant opportunities to support University priorities.
- Coordinate with the University System of Maryland Office of Research and the UMES Advancement Services Office to request and review prospect research profiles related to foundation and corporate grant opportunities.
- To draft, review, revise and negotiate university agreements with third parties.
- To ensure that University agreements with third parties comply with University policy and procedures and applicable international, federal and state laws.
- To assist business officers and other University personnel with contractual matters and understanding contractual terms.
- To develop a system for contract management and maintain all documentation and record-keeping for contracts.
- Review and submit grant proposals in the absence of the Director of Research.
- Other duties as required and consistent with the Office of Research.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Demonstrated history of at least three years of successful grants seeking.
- Exceptionally strong writing ability.
- Candidates should be organized and a strategic thinker.
- Master’s degree
- Ability to work with a variety of faculty members from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrate evidence of collaboration in teams and with stakeholders.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal skills.
