HPCAT has an opening for an Assistant Physicist position. We seek a candidate with a strong background in large volume apparatus (Paris Edinburgh and/or multi-anvil press) and overall experience with high pressure experimental techniques coupled with x-ray measurements. The candidate will be expected to work along with other HPCAT staff in continuing to develop the large volume PE press program at 16BM-B beamline at the APS. Furthermore, the candidate will play an integral part in various technique developments, as well as providing support-input toward the upcoming HPCAT and APS upgrade plans. The selected candidate will help in continuing to support long term plans for PE press at HPCAT and supporting diverse user community on this capability.
Position Requirements
  • Candidates with PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science/engineering, geoscience and/or other relevant fields will be considered.
  • In addition to adequate background in large volume platforms and x-ray measurements, we seek a candidate that has experience in: technique development (such as thermal-electrical measurements, ultrasonic measurements, etc.), modeling/simulation (including scientific based and engineering software), and comfort with performing hands on assembly and software use.
  • HPCAT is a large user facility, and it is a requirement that the candidate has adequate verbal and written communication skills.
Overall, the candidate is expected to contribute scientific ideas and work independently or in collaboration with HPCAT staff and/or users toward further development of PE capabilities and growing the technical and scientific programs. The position will start as limited 2-year term (renewable each year) and expected to convert into permanent staff upon mutual agreement, positive work-evaluation, and funding availability.
