Department Overview:
The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.
Function/Duties of Position:
This position plays a vital role in supporting the Biostatistics Shared Resource (BSR) of the Knight Cancer Institute. The incumbent provides biostatistical consulting services to cancer researchers, which includes pre-award and post-award projects. Pre-award projects includes protocol and grant development (e.g., study design consultation and preparing a statistical analysis plan). Post-award projects involves initial consultation, project agreement (cost estimate and project planning), data management, statistical analysis, the final project report, and manuscript preparation. This position involves significant interaction with the client, requiring excellent and effective oral and written communication skills. For example, the incumbent must be able to explain complex statistical concepts and results to biomedical researchers with very little statistical training. The incumbent is expected to participate in general cancer center activities including attendance at the annual retreat, research program meetings and seminars. S/he is expected to learn new statistical methods and keep up with newer, cutting-edge statistical methods in cancer. The position reports directly to the Associate Director of the Biostatistics Shared Resource (Dr. Byung Park).

2. Statistical consulting for pre- and post-award projects. Pre-award projects involve protocol and grant development (study design consultation and preparation of the statistical analysis plan). Post-award projects involve initial consultation, project agreement (cost estimate and project planning), data management, statistical analysis, and project report and manuscript preparation.
2. Statistical programming support to faculty biostatisticians in the Biostatistics Shared Resource
3. Keeping up with current statistical knowledge through study group meetings, seminars and professional conference
4. Participate in peer-mentoring and collaboration within the BSR group and interact with other biostatisticians on campus
5. Participation in cancer center activities
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Biostatistician 1
  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 3 years of relevant experience
Note: We will consider applicants at the entry level classification of this research family.

  • Equivalent combination of training and experience
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Familiarity with statistical software and program language including SAS and R programming
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Typing 60wpm
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
Preferred Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • Master's degree in biostatistics or statistics
  • Relevant experience in medical research
  • Relevant experience in cancer research
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
  • Proficient knowledge or skills in areas such as: statistical methods, econometrics, machine learning, coding/programming in industry-standard data analysis software (R, Stata, SAS), coding conventions and reproducible research practices, data infrastructure, cost or quality measurement, data validation, health economics, state or national health care policy and policy reforms.
