Job Summary
Help children safely board on/off the bus. Help children/special needs children into their seats. Make sure wheelchairs, seat belts / harnesses are secure and on correctly. Observes, monitor children on bus while in motion. Cope with behaviorally impaired children.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

(In addition to the following, other duties may be assigned)

Observe and monitor children on assigned bus, while bus is in motion to/from Head Start Centers.
Completes department paperwork correctly and submit by deadline.
Observes children on bus for any abuse, neglect, or illness and follows procedures to report and respond to observations.
Maintain interior cleanliness of vehicle, floor, windows, trash, personal belongings, etc. Sweeps bus floor daily, cleans interior weekly.
Wears neat, clean and freshly pressed transportation related shirt, while children are being transported.
Ability to have full control with bus discipline at all times.
Ability to be patient and understanding.
Interact in a positive manner with staff, children, and parents.
Help maintain positive control over children transported on bus.
Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g.' medical records, etc...
Teach school bus safety to children, to be completed in the first 30 days of school.
Participates in screening, training, agency activities and field trips as assigned.
Must complete the “walk back” procedure every time after transporting children.
Other Assigned Duties
Covers Food Service Driver routes when short staffed, and be able to carry/ lift 50 lbs. or more when needed. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, push, pull, sit, bend, and crouch. Must occasionally walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; reach with hands or arms; and climb or balance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather and will be exposed to hot, cold, and wet weather.

Required Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Must pass yearly ODE physical and all drug screenings. Must maintain current certification for first-aid, child abuse, CPR, and communicable disease.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of diverse ethnic groups.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to parents and employees of the organization.
Licensing and Certifications
Must have valid Driver's License, good driving record with no more than 2 points on drivers abstract.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply basic mathematical functions.
Reasoning Ability
The ability to use sound judgement to make well thought-out and informed decisions, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding, and use critical thinking skills to problem solve situations that involve several variables.
Technology Skills
Basic technology skills which include: email management skills; computer network knowledge applicable to your department’s systems, and Microsoft office suites.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and sit. Must occasionally walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; reach with hands or arms; and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision.
Mental Fitness
Ability to focus, make clear decisions, use judgement, be stable and can control emotions, remain calm under adversity, ability to handle stress; be able to remain calm and professional in the face of challenging behaviors.
Work Hours
40 hours/week, generally Monday-Friday, with some evening/weekend work required.
May work split shifts.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather and will be exposed to hot, cold, and wet weather when transporting children. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate from engine noise and children’s activity.
