The COVID-19 Recovery AmeriCorps Program (www.iowaeda.com/covid-americorps-members/) supports local organizations working to address the social, economic and physical needs of Iowans impacted by the pandemic. Since May 2020, the COVID-19 Recovery AmeriCorps Program has placed more than 160 members in full or part time service in 20+ Iowa communities at 40+ organizations.
AmeriCorps is a National Service program that places AmeriCorps members with organizations across US state and territories for a set number of weeks and hours.
This position with Catherine McAuley Center in Cedar Rapids is a 36-week commitment. The AmeriCorps member will serve a part time schedule averaging 20 hours per week and will receive a living allowance totaling $7623. In addition, successful completion of the term of service earns an education award of $2474.27 to be used to pay qualified student loans or future education-related expenses. The member will have free and confidential access to a Member Assistance Program and will receive professional development opportunities throughout the service term.
AmeriCorps members will serve with Catherine McAuley Center to address refugee and immigrant program support in Cedar Rapids through the following service activities.
Support Refugee and Immigrant Programming

• Create a welcoming and engaging space for children while parents engage in adult programming
• Recruit, train and support volunteers with an emphasis on recruiting from within the refugee and immigrant community
• Manage volunteer and staff coverage schedules to ensure uninterrupted provision of services
• Communicate and uphold safety standards
• Track usage data

Develop leveled curriculum for children 18 months through 12 years of age

• Collaborate with CMC staff and skilled volunteers to learn best practices in curriculum development
• Define monthly units and weekly topics
• Create leveled activities for multiple age groups
• Develop a process for storing and accessing lesson materials for transferability to volunteers

Evaluate effectiveness of program

• Define outcomes of childcare program
• Develop and implement assessments to be administered to children, parents and volunteers
• Review assessment findings with staff team members
• Brainstorm and implement programming tweaks to optimize program use and efficacy

Position Requirements:

• Ability to lift 40lbs
• Ability to kneel, sit on floor and stand
• Must pass DHS Child & Dependent Adult Abuse Registry check
• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
• Fluency in Spanish, Swahili, French, Kirundi, Lingala, Dari, Pasto is a preference

Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years of age or older by start date
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be in process of completion
• Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
• Must pass mandatory pre-service background checks

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $211.75 per week
