Salary:
Clerk II: $33,024/year ($2,752/month, $15.88/hour), SR-06, BU:03
Clerk III: $34,356/year ($2,863/month, $16.52/hour), SR-08, BU:03
Clerk IV: $36,504/year ($3,042/month, $17.55/hour), SR-10, BU:03

At Hilo Medical Center, a nationally-recognized "Top Performing" hospital, the Clerk is a valuable member of our team. This position provides a variety of clerical and unit assistance to support the professional staff, performs independently and prioritizes tasks assigned during emergency situations, functions in accordance with established policies and procedures of the hospital, is knowledgeable with regulations governing Medicare, Medicaid and collective bargaining agreements as well as performs other duties as assigned.

We have a number of clerical staff openings on our acute units within Hilo Medical Center. All positions are full-time with benefits.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experience is credited based on a 40-hour workweek.

GENERAL CLERICAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Clerk II: One-half year (½ year)
  • Clerk III: One and one-half (1 ½) years
  • Clerk IV: Two and one-half (2 ½) years

General Clerical Experience must include progressively responsible work experience which involved the performance of a variety of clerical tasks and demonstrated knowledge of English, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, common office appliances and equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, compare words and numbers quickly and accurately, and operate various kinds of office equipment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GENERAL CLERICAL EXPERIENCE:

1. Graduation from high school may be substituted for one-half (1/2) year of experience.

2. Successful completion of a substantially full-time equivalent clerical curriculum of duration of a year or longer leading to a degree or diploma at an accredited community college, or at a business or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures, and office machines may be substituted for one (1) year of general clerical experience.

3. Successful completion of a substantially full-time equivalent clerical curriculum of a duration of a year or longer, leading to a degree or diploma at an accredited community college, or at a business or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures, and office machines will be deemed to have met the General Clerical experience requirements for the Clerk III level.

4. Successful completion of a substantially full-time equivalent clerical curriculum leading to a degree, diploma, or a certificate of achievement at an accredited community college, business school or technical school which was for a period of less than one (1) year will be substituted for experience on a month-for-month basis provided the training included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general procedures and office machines.

5. Partial Completion of Clerical Training

a) Completion of half a school year of substantially full-time clerical curriculum at an accredited community college, or business and/or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures, and office machines; may be substituted for six (6) months of experience.

b) Completion of one (1) school year (a program of more than one (1) year in length) of substantially full-time clerical curriculum at an accredited community college, or business and/or technical school which included courses in basic English, arithmetic, general clerical procedures, and office machines will be deemed to have met the one (1) year of general clerical work experience.

6. Education in an accredited university in a baccalaureate program with courses in English composition and college mathematics may be substituted for general clerical work experience on the basis of 15 semester hours for six (6) months of experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.

SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: To qualify for Clerk IV positions, candidates must demonstrate possession of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) from the American Heart Association must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Please submit copy of certification with the application. Ability to type a net of 40 WPM is preferred.

Must be available to work shifts, weekends and holidays, based on hospital operations (services are provided 24/7).

MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT: COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
