Controller & Manager General Accounting
Job description
Modern Woodmen of America seeks a Controller in the General Accounting department. Successful candidates have strong project management, organizational, technical and communication skills as well as the ability to train and supervise staff and establish priorities. This role will oversee the accounting processes and functions of Modern Woodmen and its subsidiaries, including responsibility for the oversight of the Annual Statement preparation and required reporting to the Board and regulatory authorities.
Core Job Responsibilities:
- Assure compliance of Modern Woodmen in all matters pertaining to accounting, financial reporting, separate accounts reporting, and taxes with all regulatory requirements.
- Lead preparation and analysis of monthly and quarterly financial reports.
- Analyze and monitor key drivers of financial performance.
- Prepare customized, timely metrics and dashboards to assist management across the organization with key financial decisions.
- Assist in preparation of annual corporate plan and other forecasting projects.
- Oversee audit requirements for Modern Woodmen and its subsidiaries.
- Oversee the annual budget of Modern Woodmen and its subsidiaries.
- Review the benefits and costs of various operations, functions, and expenses as directed or as needed.
- Research and interpret complex technical accounting issues.
- Comply with and support Modern Woodmen’s policies and procedures.
- Openly communicate and maintain good rapport with colleagues, staff, and the field force.
- Develop and maintain a positive and professional work environment.
- Develop and maintain a well-trained staff. Challenge others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model and mentor.
- Maintain discipline, resolve problems and assist in determining performance, promotions, transfers or dismissals.
- Participate in department and Modern Woodmen projects and committees as assigned.
What we need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and 12+ years’ related experience.
- Excellent communication skills and habits.
- Strong project management, organizational, technical and communication skills.
- Train, motivate, and develop staff to meet the current and future needs of the department and Modern Woodmen.
- Assist in maintaining discipline, resolving problems, determining performance, and recommending promotions, transfers, or dismissals of department staff.

- Starting salary based on experience.
- This position offers the ability for in-office, hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek), or remote work arrangements. You’ll work with your leader to determine which option may align best based on several factors.
